Review

"This is the most accurate and insightful account of the Gulf War I have read" (Norman Schwarzkopf)

"A gripping account...told with insight, a keen sense of drama and the benefit of a good deal of fresh interview material" (Avi Shlaim, Professor of International Relations, Oxford University)

"Peter and Dan Snow have written a vivid account of one of the most important battles in the history of the British army. The forgotten victory at Amiens is given the recognition it deserves." (Hew Strachan, Professor of History of War, Oxford University)

I won't mark it down because it's lite...it's worth the four stars being detailed and concise and well written.

You see at a glance what battles are included and how many pages there are, so you cannot be disappointed with the detail....besides, there is plenty of detail here. Not for your hardcore historian, but it makes the reader want to read more on the battles.

The book focuses on Amiens, Midway, Stalingrad, The Imjin River (Korea), The Tet Offensive (Vietnam), Yom Kippur (Israel), The Falklands and Kuwait.

Each of them is about 40 pages. There are some maps laying out plans and offensives and some actual pictures taken during the battles.

As the other reviewer said, it is "lite"...40 pages per battle is by no means in depth, but there is plenty of info packed into these 40 pages.

A great read and a bargain at the offered price.

I have always had an interest in History, mainly ancient history but as I have got older modern day conflicts have caught my eye and some I have known very little about.
I picked up this book as I wanted to learn a bit more about some of the recent battles and how they have affected the world in which we live in. I wanted something that wasn't going to bog me down with dates and units and step by step recollections of what happened but more of an overview of several recent battles. This book worked perfectly, from the battle of Amiens to the Kuwait battle this book delivered just enough detail to keep me interested without sending me to sleep.
I now have a better understanding of why these conflicts happened and how the outcomes came about.

A good read that maybe too light for some, but had just enough for me.

y youngest son is a fanatical history buff, and this book is perfect for him. The only downside is that he likes to relate the book

Very handy book which gives a very good outline of 'strategem' and uses real life scenarios as case study to teach and understand the different concepts and tactics in a combat zone. Recommended for Beginners as well as reference!
