Product Description

Album Description

Pianist Tim Richards is a familiar presence on the British contemporary jazz scene where he is best known for his work with his band Spirit Level. This is his second trio outing on 33 Jazz and it features the new line-up which toured the UK during 2002. Recorded in the studio, it features the trio in fine form on a fascinating selection of numbers by the likes of Gene Harris, Horace Silver, Billy Taylor and Abdullah Ibrahim, plus a couple of Richards originals.

The intimate nature of the trio gives Richards a chance to explore his roots in blues, bebop and hard-bop. The three musicians display an impressive cohesion in settings that include hard swinging blues and bebop, lyrical ballads ("When sunny Gets Blue"), the Afro-Cuban flavours of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca" and the lilting rhythms of Ahmad Jamal's "Poinciana."

Personnel: Tim Richards - (piano), Dominic Howles - (bass), Matt Home - (drums)

Format:Audio CD
Highly likable jazz piano trio recording.Superb but carefully understated musicianship, great recording quality and an intriguing mixture of original tunes and well chosen covers would make this disc an entertaining and worthwhile addition to any jazz lovers collection. At the first listen you may feel it's all a bit too loungey, but persist and you'll discover a band that are really about lightness of touch and economy. If a gentle word will do, how much better then a tiresome over-wrought paragraph!Subtly is a rare commodity in an improvisatory art form such as jazz, so it's all the more welcome when you come across it, especially in as such a pleasing form as you'll find it here. So,after a hard day at the coalface I can guarantee the bluesy /gently swinging music contained here in will restore the spirits and put a spring in the step.

In terms of quality control:no clunkers present. If I had to name some stand out tracks I think the takes on 'Ishmael' by Abdullah Ibrahim and 'It's a Great Night for Swinging' with it's lovely bass solo are first rate. Also to be mentioned- the lovely piano intro to 'When Sunny Gets Blue' is just beautiful.Expect few surprises, but if it's well crafted ,fully house trained jazz you're after, 'Twelve by Three' is hard to beat.

Recommended.
