After so many negative reviews I nearly didn't buy this but glad i did. This product is expensive for what it is but it works perfectly. The stand on an iMac gets wider and more important thicker towards the base so it is impossible for the bracket to slip down. Once the brackets have been fitted to the shelf it is very easy to fit to the stand simply by sliding the brackets onto the stand and then pushing down till they grip tight. Once this has been done the shelf will easily slide from side to side. 2 sets of inserts are provided for mounting the shelf high or low. It also comes with 4 posts which allow vertical standing of portable drives, I have 3 standing on the shelf vertical without any problems.

I have a 2012 iMac 27 and have no knowledge of other iMacs. It is possible that older iMacs have a thinner stand or the stand thickness is the same from top to bottom. If the thickness of the stand does not increase then this WILL NOT WORK. Also this bracket is useless for mounting on the front of my iMac27 and I doubt whether it would be of any use on the front of any iMac. You should check compatibility with your iMac before buying.

I like this so much that I am thinking of getting another one for the lower position on my IMac

I should have paid more attention to the negative reviews here already. You might get lucky and get a good one but this simply doesn't do the job it's supposedly designed for. Its incredibly fiddly to set up and there isn't enough tension in the fixing method to keep the shelf in place - it just slips down. Despite the manufacturer's allusions, there is now way this is a precision piece of engineering. There is no way I'd trust this to hold a Mac mini or hard drive securely. Disappointing.

I sent the thing back.

A few negative reviews on here. Unusually, each review says the same thing. So do I.

The product is actually faulty. There is not enough tension in the screw to stay affixed to the shelf and this means that you cannot properly secure the shelf. The other reviewers sent it back, I chose not to because while it is faulty, so long as I do not put much on it, basically limiting it to a single SSD drive, it will be ok. Anything else, it will give way.

This product is faulty and the manufacturer should re-design or re-manufacture it. I also agree with this review:

I bought one (from Apple Store) to fit to the front of my 27" iMac, to hold keys or glasses.

It turns out the photo showing it fitted to the front is not a real photo, but just a mockup.
In reality it is set way too far back, and you cant put anything on it without scraping your hand on the bottom of the lcd.
Even as a place to put your keyboard its very awkward to use.

Trying to fit it to the rear instead, doesn't fare any better. Even after tightening the screws with pliers, it just slips down as soon as you put even 200g on it.

How Twelve South can design something this bad, and expect it to be well received is just beyond me.

The shelf matched my iMac but sadly it would not grip properly into the computer stand so it was returned

This product is well presented (packaged) and has been well designed. Being able to hide computers, hard drives and wires behind the Thunderbolt monitor is a brilliant idea. Yes screwing the clips on is a bit fiddly, if like me you have old hands, but you only do it once and with the careful use of a pair of pliers you can get enough leverage to make it secure. The silicon retaining pillars (4) and the silicon mat to protect metal parts was a pleasant surprise. The stated weight limit is 3 lbs, which is not much. However I mounted a Mini Mac (close to the back of the monitor to reduce leverage) and a WD my book 2TB hard drive both held in place by the pillars. I estimate the combined weight to be 5 lbs ! It has held so far, although I suspect it is on the limit of its capacity. The problem is the gauge of the metal. By increasing the thickness or using material with higher tensile strength the load could be significantly increased and hence produce a more useful product, because at £29.99 it really is a bit expensive.

The method of attachment could be easier. Getting the bolts to be tight enough to prevent the shelf sliding isn't easy.

Got this in combination with the MacBack and have to say.. The packaging is more elite with this product but then it stops already. Fits only in one place on the stand ... If you need a additional tray combine this one with the MacBack and you have two very stable trays .
