If you love the Grand National, you'll love this DVD. In particular, it contains all three of Red Rum's winning races and I'm not aware that this footage is available anywhere else. When you see him flying towards the winning post "like a fresh horse in great style", as described by Peter O'Sullevan - not once - but three times, if you're not already a huge fan of this exceptional horse you soon will be. It features other Aintree triumphs of course, including Bob Champion's memorable win on Aldaniti.

Fantastic opportunity to relive some great races. Obviously Red Rums victories stand out but to see again Foinavons amazing win in 1967 is wonderful. And the races are shown in their entirety. My only complaint is that they haven't issued a follow up disc of further great nationals maybe this time digging up newsreel footage and going back before the television era. If they do I'll certainly cough up for it. Now if only BBC would do something similar with the rest of their racing archives - how about great Gold Cups, Champion Hurdles etc in their entirety also for starters.

Richard Pitman's "150 years of the Grand National" is an excellent historical reference of the great steeplechase. However that program only offered one memorable complete running - that of Red Rum's third triumph.To me, the greatest Grand National was the 1973 edition of Crisp vs. Red Rum, and the lack of complete footage of that race left me longing to see it start to finish - which thankfully "12 Greatest Grand Nationals" delivers. This DVD offers complete footage of each of the years covered with some runnings that are arguable as to their flattering inclusion. Could Foinavon'a victory - although memorable - not be considered for a "worst 12" feature ? Similarly the 1998 version won by Red Marauder was more a war of attrition than a race. Memorable years missing include the victorys of Anglo and Red Alligator ...both sons of the mare Miss Alligator.
Regardless any "best ever" compilation will never be unanimous in opinions of what should constitute inclusion. Suffice to say that this DVD is worth the price for renewing the memories of Freddie's game battle with Jay Trump and all three of Red Rum's wins and his gallant loss to another great horse - L'Escargot. No steeplechase or hunt fan can go wrong with this production.
