In my view this is a better version of this Grimm Bros fairy tale than the Errol Le Cain version, and that's saying something. The illustrations are as luscious as a pound of damsons. Taken as naturalistic illustrations, in fact, they are a high-point of book illustration by any standard and in any age - just sumptuous. Nor do they take over the text -they properly illuminate it, and the text on its own is full and intriguing.
I congratulate the publishers on this production. I'd give it 50, not 5 stars!
