Book Description

28 May 2009
Clea Myers, a young English woman, comes to America to live the dream but experiences the nightmare. She goes from an Ivy League College to Los Angeles Women's Penitentiary in 3 years, emaciated and addicted to crystal meth. How could things go so wrong and in such a short space of time?

Myers shares her descent into the hell of crystal methamphetamine  dependence. Her story is of An English girl from a privileged background
whose addiction journey brings her from an Ivy League College to Los Angeles Women’s Penitentiary in only three years, emaciated and
addicted to crystal meth.

Myers’ description of her rapid demise is a sometimes uncomfortable read, as she holds nothing back. The lights of Hollywood twinkled briefly but, once introduced to crystal meth, she became addicted. ‘Dumpster diving ‘became a regular pastime: grovelling in large rubbish containers, ‘diving’ for articles of value or fascination to her hugely disturbed mind. She was reduced to an animal existence, surrounded by dangerous and sometimes violent people.

Arrested and jailed, she hit rock bottom and was offered a chance to leave LA immediately or stay in the drug offenders Programme. Helped
by a family member, she returned to England still unable to stop completely. Finally, she did get help and discover a recovery path which
combined her buddhist faith and reassures her relationship with the 12-step programme.

Crystal meth in England has been reported only on the gay club scene. Part of the reason Myers wrote this book is to warn young people of its dangers. This book could be well used as part of a schools drug  education programme.DAVID CHARKHAM is an addictions therapist
at Capio Nightingale Hopsital and founder of Sober Support  International

I felt as if I had been grabbed by the scruff of the neck and dragged aboard a runaway train that was accelerating towards disaster. Myers records how her recreational use of crystal meth progressed inexorably to complete loss of contact with reality and immersion in full-blown paranoia. She acknowledges that her privileged background accounts in part for the support she had in escaping addiction and shows plenty of examples of others less fortunate whose lives are warped and mutilated by this lethally addictive drug.

I'm a sucker for these kinds of books and tend to be over generous in praising them but having read this (and then the one by a woman called Tia about being an addict in Baltimore)this is a great read and well written. Buy it. You wont be disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously Fantastic 27 Oct 2013

This has to be the best account of addiction I have ever read. A truly fascinating account of one person's addiction
journey which is well written and a refreshingly honest and amusing in parts. I could totally relate to what the author was going through, despite having never went through a crystal meth addiction. Absolutely amazing!

4.0 out of 5 stars very interesting memoir 29 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very well-written account of a young woman's misadventure in Hollywood and the easy seduction of drugs and strange company. Nomadic, intelligent and privileged, Clea finds Hollyweird and LA strangely magnetic as she graduates Brown, almost as though she is looking to make her life a drama and to seek out the characters in her very own play. In that respect she has come up trumps with material for this book which provides a rich and eccentric cast of characters and a steady supply of crazy happenings in Clea's life.

At times, you wonder if this is all true or has been patterned and crafted into a novel but it is very readable and provides a cautionary tale of how easy it is to slide into drug addiction and yet kid yourself that you are merely a user and not an addict. Of all the things that Clea strives to be; a model, a screenwriter, an actress she has clearly found her calling as a writer and I am sure she has many more books in her.

One thing i would have liked to see is some pictures of the author so we could put a face to a name. I wish Clea all the best in her continuing recovery as she demonstrates by her own words that it is a difficult path and a constant struggle.
