Format:Audio CD
Tveitt's music isn't difficult, but - and if you don't like it you could call this difficult - it isn't traditionally romantic or lush, it's spicy and spiky, sometimes naive and has the 'usual' Nordic folklore influences. When I heard these interesting pianoconcertos for the first time I immediately thought Prokofiev! But he owes a lot too to Jón Leifs' - from Iceland - music but I really don't know if they knew each other and heard about eachother's music.
It's nice to know that a composer, tucked away in remote parts of Norway, has been influenced by so many well known composers. Tveitt has no voice of his own but that is NO problem so is the price of this CD, ridiculously cheap, and the performance is very good. There're no comparisons for these concertos but BIS - the enterprising Swedish CD label - has some of his folksuites on CD and soon Tveitt's symphonic poem Prillar will make its debut. Buy!

My initial reaction to the cover of this CD was one of trepidation at the prospect of hideous dissonance (a la Sorabji) from a composer I had only fleetingly heard of. May I say how wrong I was - the opening line of the first concerto (a youthful and energetic masterpiece) is almost meltingly beautiful and demands full attention. The other movements are similarly catching to the ear and although they do betray the influence of Grieg, Prokofiev and (to a lesser extent in the third movement)Rachmaninov, I think Tveitt comes across as the greatest kind of composer, one who does not try to bend the ear to new directions but continues to build upon great things well-proven by others. This is a wonderful introduction to Tveitt's lovely (and sprightly) soundworld - I implore as many lovers of good music as possible to simply enjoy these pianistic delights.
