Product Description

Product Description

Harmony Records was founded in 1925 as a subsidiary of Columbia Records and was revived in 1957. This new Harmony label was used solely to release 33rpm long-playing records and like many other budget labels, it was 'cheap and cheerful'. Harmony however, had the advantage of the entire Columbia back catalogue to draw upon for their compilations. With such an eclectic mix as this, there are riches to be found on every track of our compilation, from Gene Krupa's jazzy title track to the Carter Family's traditional closer - a veritable cornucopia of delights.

Product Description

2CD set. Snazzy 50-track collection of Harmony label recordings from 1957 to 1962! Features Gene Krupa, Rosemary Clooney, Carl Perkins, Billie Holiday, Liberace, Benny Goodman, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 great CDs of old Harmony label tracks... 15 May 2014

Tuxedo Junction, The Harmony Records Story, DAY2CD242

CD1 running time 66.35
CD2 running time 67.18

This new compilation of material released on the Harmony label using the Columbia back catalogue is perhaps the most eclectic mix on offer to date and one featuring many familiar compositions from well known artistes. The source material is 33rpm albums and this does provide for in my opinion higher fidelity. The sound transfers are very good indeed. As I was listening to these recordings it suddenly struck me that some of these albums had an LP release on the UK Pickwick, Hallmark label in the 1970s and I had some of them.

The liner notes by Brian Parkes provide the background to the label and give the album titles for some of the original compilation albums on the Harmony label. The stats do give the original years of recording for the track (not the date of the Harmony compilation album) and they also quote the Harmony record number. The red, black & white colour scheme for the packaging includes 6 small round pictures of artistes appearing on the collection. This is another fascinating and great value collection on the One Day Music label.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite What It Says on The Tin 19 May 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a very odd collection. The cover states 1957-1962 and this to some extent is true since all of the tracks were released or re-released by Harmony Records on LPs during this time span. However, the actual recording dates range from 1928 to 1959. There are a good few cover versions here as well as well as a few original recordings. As for the content, well it ranges from the Appalachian country/folk of the Carter Family to fifties pop and rock 'n' roll via big band, a little jazz themed material and Liberace!

This is an interesting collection that is quite hard to categorise. There are certainly some tracks I would happily have left out but then you get the really good stuff like Carl Perkins version of Hey Good Lookin' which is almost worth the price alone. Sound quality is good considering the age of some of the tracks. Recommended only if you have very wide taste in music.

4.0 out of 5 stars some good songs but cd title listing was a mess 15 May 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've bought many of these 1950's-1960's compilation cds and this one had the worst track/artist listing ever, cd1 had the correct song title but all the artists were listed as various, cd2 didn't show any of the correct listings but a mish mash of cd1 (ironically with the correct artists) - not a major problem as I corrected this in i-tunes but very annoying & time wasting but as it's cheap I can't really moan so hence why I've given only 4 stars
