At a time when the nation's politicians were convinced that black men didn't have what it took to fly sophisticated war machines, they decided to conduct an experiment. What began as an attempt to prove thier faulty theory, ended in a triumph for generations to come.

The nation's brightest and most qualified black men were invited into the competition. They came from all over the nation to have a chance to be trained as fighter or bomber pilots by the U.S. Military. The competition was stiff and the pressure was great. But out of this training, some of the best pilots in history emerged.

This film follows the men through their triumphs and their tragedies. It tells of the brave men who were able to break through color barriers and maintain an incredible spirit. A spirit which drove them to attain one of the best fighting records in the war.

It is a definite must see. It contains something for everyone and parallels every group struggle against the forces of hate and prejudice.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that no Black men or women were even remotely involved in the Second World War so little attention is paid to their contribution. Having read 4 (count 'em - 4) books about said contribution in the First and the Second World Wars I've long found it strange how rarely their presence is acknowledged in 'mainstream' films. For this reason alone 'The Tuskegee Airmen' would be worth seeing if it weren't for some excellent performances from the leads. This film is for those looking for one of the many 'lost' chapters in the history of those terrible conflicts.

For anyone not familiar with the Tuskegee story, this is a superb movie showing the struggle of a group of black trainee pilots against the institutionalised rascism in the US armed forces in WW2. Brilliant performances by Laurence Fishburne & Cuba Gooding make this must see film.
