5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Turtle Beach XP500 28 Nov 2011

Review of Turtle Beach XP500s for use on Xbox 360

Before I get into this review, I must confess that I love gadgets with loads of options and new technology, so whereas I liked the X41s I had previously, the fact they only had one bass button and weren't totally wireless disappointed me a little.

First impressions

I was very pleased to discover that the X500s came in an actual box rather than a vacuum packed plastic container which you have to open with industrial scissors. A small detail, I know, but immediately you feel that more thought has been put into these than the X41s.

When you open the box you discover that the base transmitter is identical in design to the X41's unit, albeit being black, not white. The headphones themselves however are noticeably different. The cups are smaller than the X41s and oval in shape, not circular. This shape is a better fit on the ear and the cups are definitely better made than the X41s with straight stitching on the leather and a battery compartment which doesn't feel like it'll break every time you open or close it. On that note, I was pleased to discover that these headphones take AA batteries not AAA. Hopefully this will mean that the battery life is longer, however rotating 4 rechargeable batteries will still be necessary.

Part of me was disappointed that the XP500s weren't rechargeable themselves, however the reason they have done this is clear. If they had a built in battery and you forget to charge them one night, then you cannot use them until they are charged. By letting the user manage the batteries/recharging themselves, the headset will always be available for use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turtle Beach XP500 wireless headset 30 Dec 2011

The previous reviewer has given a detailed review with lots of factual information, so I'll confine my comments to an overview. This is an epic gaming headset, totally wireless (including Bluetooth for the controller), superb quality sound with not a hint of interference. I have a pair of Stax Lambda headphones which are serious Hi-Fi, the XP500's are not far behind them for sound quality. The sound localization is also spectacular, they are comfortable to wear and of high build quality. They are pricey but for my money, the best gaming headset on the market. Definite drool-over kit!

I bought these after much consideration but was almost instantly disappointed.

After reading reviews that said there may be some interference issues, I started with my WiFi router switched off. However, I still experienced popping, drops in volume and crackling. Moving my receiver closer and away from obstructions helped matters but I still experienced drops/cracks/pops every few minutes or so. Completely unacceptable in my eyes when you're paying £170.

Interference aside, the headset's amazing; quality sound, nicely laid out design, easy to connect, comfy headband (although even on the smallest size it's a v.loose fit & you have to be careful), nice bluetooth connectivity to a second device (hands free calls / listen to music on your mobile phone) and wireless chat connection to my 360.

Why Turtle beach included 2.4ghz Wireless on their flagship headset when their other devices are 5ghz is beyond me.

I'm not saying they won't work, just buy with caution.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not upto it 2 Oct 2012
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
First off im an Xbox user i have not tried these one any other platform.

I have loved Turtle beach headsets for a few years now and i have say im really let down by these.

Ive been testing out the XP400, XP500, A50 and Tritton Warheads over the last week and i have to say the both the Turtle beach headsets do not have the same quality as the the Tritton or Astros.

The interference is terrible on the XP500s and XP400s for some reason they keep dropping out and clicking in my ear all the time. The Bluetooth puck is a pain as well cause it keeps dropping out and some times take a few mins to connect on startup (bit on the BT only on the XP400s sorry)

They still have that annoying shhhhhhhh noise through xbox live chat, had this for years now on their wireless models but every one else has fixed it

I think i have a standard size head (male, 6ft tall etc) and i have to say these headsets are just too loose. on the smallest setting if i put my head down they nearly fall off. I want a wireless headset thats planted to my head not one that might break when it hits the floor.

Their is some great parts, the sound quality is great but so are all the other surround sound headsets. The presets are really good probs the best available on the market at the mo i would say. The software that allows you to edit the presets is cool too.

From testing probably the 4 best wireless headsets available i would say the Tritton Warheads are the best and offer more as a wireless headset.

It breaks my heart to write a bad review about a Turtle Beach headset but it seems the competition have done a little better this time and i cant see TB releasing any thing in the very near future for me to say other wise.

All in all the turtle beach are not value for money and have many annoying flaws

Happy to answer any questions
