This product is excellent and does exactly what it says on the tin.
If you want the optical output to pass through digital signals (DTS or Dolby Digital for example) then you will need to go to the turtle beach website and download the SPDIF drivers, otherwise this product just works straight out of the box.
For me this is an excellent workaround for my TV not passing through more than 2 channels of digital audio from the HDMI inputs to the optical audio output so I am over the moon. - The only other alternative was to buy a new audio amp that had HDMI input/output capability to put between my laptop and my TV (very expensive). This device now allows me to send the audio direct from my laptop to my old Sony amp and it works flawlessly.

Fun:
Bought this for an XBMC media centre running on a HP Microserver which doesn't have any audio hardware. Running it on Ubuntu Linux 10.04, and this worked out of the box, passing through Dolby Digital and DTS to my receiver. Gone from 6 x RCAs on my old setup to a single optical. Brilliant and cheap.

Finally 5.1 surround sound for my laptop, this is possibly the cheapest and greatest option for 5.1, to enable 5.1 you just have to go on turtle beach's website and download the right drivers.
