And the odds seem to be stacked in Matthew's favour. He s got the colourful locals on board, his hard-to-please girlfriend is warming to the idea and he has the means to force Harry s hand. Review

~Christine Stovell's story is set against the beautifully depicted backdrop of a down-at-heel coastal village. You're seduced as much by life in the sleepy boatyard as by the infuriating but gorgeous Matthew Corrigan. Turning The Tide is a real holiday read.~ --Mslexia Magazine

About the Author

Winning a tin of chocolate in a national essay competition at primary school inspired Christine Stovell to become a writer! After graduating from UEA, she took various jobs in the public sector writing research papers and policy notes by day and filling up her spare drawers with embryonic novels by night. Losing her dad to cancer made her realise that if she was ever going to get a novel published she had to put her writing first. Setting off, with her husband, from a sleepy seaside resort on the east coast in a vintage wooden boat to sail halfway round Britain provided the inspiration for her novel Turning the Tide. Christine has also published numerous short stories and articles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful debut novel 27 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
Turning the Tide is excellent stuff and so highly readable I got through it in three days.

It has everything I enjoy in a book; great writing, vivid dialogue you can hear in your head, and not a wasted word on the page. Most of all there is wonderful characterisation - I particularly liked the feisty but quirky Harry and the setting (it was refreshing to see a novel set in a boatyard) - and most of all a lovely romance. I loved the change in narratives and found myself tearing through the book to see what happened next between Harry and Matthew. The characters who will stay with you long after you finish the novel. But don't be tricked into thinking that this is just another chick-lit novel. Beneath the wit and sparkle of her writing are deeper, darker waters that give depth to the characters and storyline. This makes for real substance and an authentic read. I would recommend it to all fans of women's fiction.

Chris Stovell is a novelist to watch out for in the future and I can't wait to read her next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story 29 Nov 2010
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Harry Watling is trying to keep her boatyard - which she inherited from her father - in business. But Little Spitmarsh is very much a backwater and her customers are declining. Matthew Corrigan has bought nearby property and wants to revive the area by opening a restaurant and building up-market housing on land owned by Harry herself. Naturally enough Harry dislikes Matthew and distrusts his plans and motives as she wants to keep the small community as it is.

I enjoyed this novel with its interesting characters and realistic dialogue and the way different people reacted to the proposed changes. I found the antagonism between Harry and Matthew realistic as they represent totally different ways of life and points of view. I also thought the boating background was interesting.

I liked George - Harry's curmudgeonly employee - he really came to life for me. Matthew as well was far from the perfect hero and all the more endearing because of his faults. I liked the way Harry stubbornly resisted the changes even when she found herself backed into a corner; just how many people behave in real life. An enjoyable read with many underlying themes and an interesting conclusion.

I really enjoyed this novel! Wonderfully written with a likeable cast of characters -- each with their own quirks and stories -- Stovell captures the spirit of Little Spitmarsh perfectly. I could smell the salty sea on almost every page. I loved Harry, the main character, and her never-say-die attitude. Looking forward to the author's next novel!
