Book Description

7 May 2010
The first half of this book is a detailed exploration of Turner's life and background. It begins with his early years in London, where he exhibited paintings in the window of his father's barber shop. Through his travels in Europe, copying and studying the old masters, Turner was largely self-taught until he enrolled at the Royal Academy. In 1796 one of his first oil paintings was hung there, and his success culminated in the opening of his own gallery. The second half of the book is a collection of his original works. These superb reproductions are accompanied by analysis of each painting and its significance regarding Turner's life, the period in which it was executed, his technique and his body of work as a whole. This reference book is essential for anyone who wants to learn more about one of the finest landscape painters in English history.

Contrary to the other reviewers that have raved about this book, i'm not overly impressed with what i've found. I'm an artist myself and have a good library of books which includes several on Turner. The range of reproductions on offer in the book is outstanding. Many of these paintings you probably won't find reproduced anywhere else, certainly not all in one book. However, in the majority of cases the paintings have not been reproduced anywhere near true to life. The colours have been intensified so that the paintings come across almost garish and this loses the subtlety that is found in Turner's real paintings. The resolution of the reproductions is also not particularly sharp, they are a bit fuzzy. Therefore I can only recommend this book as an introduction, there are much better books out there on Turner, perhaps try 'A Wonderful Range of Mind' or 'Turner in his Time'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy at your peril 10 Feb 2014

This book deserve 1 star and no more.It is a coffee table book and it will be more useful as a tea mat to put your cup of coffee. What a let down because the painting are small and you need a magnifying to see it.2) they are blurry 3)the accompanying text does not shed any light on the paintings. What we need a book that reproduce paintings in clear focus and a guide what look for but this book failed to do justice to Turner and his paintings.Any recommendation of what book should I buy.Thanks.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Turner and his work as I do. You do not necessarily have to be an art critic.
