Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Though far from conclusive proof, Turn It Up, London producer IG Culture's second album as New Sector Movements, goes a long way to supporting his claim to be UK R&B's leading light. Where the blissed-out, sun-drenched jazz-fusion of his NSM debut, 2001's Download This, showed him adept at caressing moods (think Master at Work's Nuyorican Soul album), Turn It Up focuses them with seductive harmonies and memorable songs. "Sho You Right" smoulders, "Don't Say It" rejoices and the slouching funk of "Soon Come" purrs under a softly intoxicating hook that demands to be sung.

Better still, he makes good his pioneering spirit and long-held fascination for studio trickery. Combining his trademark broken beats, a slack handful of squelching grooves and yet more slyly addictive vocals, "Trying Times" and "Broken" clatter and smooch their way to being a sweetly futuristic take on soul. With sub-bass hip-hop and disappointingly off-the-peg ragga muddying the mix, things occasionally veer towards chaos rather than eclectic disorder. But the brilliance of Culture's new-found pop sensibility is still plain to hear. In "Tha Fame" he's got a curious left-field hit if he wants one, and the barebones cyber sing-along of "Digital Age" would make Prince at his most ingenious proud. --Dan Gennoe

London sounds 11 Jun 2004
Format:Audio CD
I.G's New Sector Movements return and have stripped down the sound and perhaps as a result cut the name to NSM.I.g Culture has been a name to check on the UK music scene for years either as a Hip Hopper with Dodge City Productions and as a leading Light on the London "broken beats" scene. He has reorded under a dizzying array of aliases which has been hard to keep up with at times. So how does the L.P shape up?
Well first off it is a major departure from the sounds on his previous work Download This. The sound is more one of modern soul and on the whole it works. The beats are tight and the bass keeps the head nodding. As is expected from a real master of production we are treated to a record of great texture and variety.I think all cuts work well together with the exception of the dancehall track with Cecile.Minor gripes aside anyone with a passing interest in Soul or Hip Hop would benefit from buying this record. Finally a major word must be made on the main vocalist Eska Mtungwazi. This lady has a sublime voice, full of soul but so versatile and interesting.Check the straight devotional sounds of She"s Got Soul and the neo Prince stylings of Digital Age,fantastic

Here there everywhere 20 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
That should be the title of this album.
Two stars for the fact its a jumbled mess of an album. Im not saying its a bad album but it's not my cup of tea.
I like an album that flows steady all the way through and if you do to then you wont buy this album.
What we have here is a great selection of different syles of music, reggae, neo-soul, hip hop and something else I cant define. but I think they are indeed talented and well worth a listen even if you send the cd back afterwards. You will almost definatly like the soul tracks, its just a shame the whole album is not full of them.
