5.0 out of 5 stars JOHNNY FANTASTIC!! 27 Mar 2004
By Kobolt5
Format:Audio CD
This album is a first for me , I hate most pop music but I take an exception to this, IT's fantastic!
The tracks are catchy, have a classic late 80's audio polish and shine and the tracks have been extremely well produced, the best sounding album I have ever heard!
Anyway... the gems on this album have to be: Shattered Dreams, Heart Of Gold, Turn Back The Clock and I Don't Want To Be A Hero. The remixes are just as good, especially Heart Of Gold.
The music is tight, I just love the classic synthesizer bass sound used on the tracks! The remaining music on the album is good, with a couple of good ballad numbers notably - What Other Reason.
If you are a pop fan, you should definitley check this album, yes it is a late 1980's album, but it holds up well compared with today's pop. And if you're not into pop, you should a least give it a try, you never know, you might like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic cd!!! great song writing!!! 2 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
And as we "turn back the clock" this was a little gem that was released some time back and was fronted by Clark Datchler, good lyrics, smooth sound and they stormed the charts with huge amounts of female fans! Then ended in a "bitter band break up"Clark Datchler left and the others continued with new front man "Phil Thornally" but on the release of the second album "tall stories" which i have a copy (it's like gold dust!!)as far as i understand there was legal problems and the cd release was stopped!!But lets forget about that and enjoy the cd that made them JHJ.Great cd,even now still sounds good!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Laid back masterpiece 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is wonderful listening (and singalong) music. "Shattered Dreams" and "Turn Back the Clock" are stereotypical Johnny Hates Jazz, nice beat, great lyrics, easy listening at its best. My favourite has to be "What Other Reason" as it is just a little different to the Johnny Hates Jazz formula but still manages to incorporate the best parts. The songs are catchy, you learn the words without trying, and you never get sick of any of it. Great laid back listening.

What can I say,

This album is great, a masterpiece,

yes this album does have that memmory feeling to it,

I remember listening to this when it came out, My mum had the original LP, I was a mere 11,12 year old kid, listening to it now, brings back those memories, of that time,my childhood, my first love breakup, etc around that time, just listen to Turn back the clock and you will see why, I wish time machines existed.

the album is really well produced, I love the synthesisers on different seasons, my favourite songs being the latter two, plus listen, and foolish heart,

What can I say a true 80's classic, buy it you won't regret it

Don't let those memories slip away.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best pop albums of the 80's 19 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
Not a big fan of popular music generally, but found this album really really good. Liked the high standard of pop tunes that were on the album, with very cool uptempo tracks like "Heart Of Gold" and "I Don't Want to be a hero", and also that they were not just songs on the surface; they had a message to them. In fact, though, I would say that those sings released as singles are not the best on the albuum. The album tracks like "Listen" and "Don't Say It's Love" are even better as as stand-alone songs with top production and good performance. I'm not much of a music critic, but I say five stars!!!!

Format:Audio CD
I am so happy to find this...I was 18 when I had this on a tape...I still have it but it's a bit dodgy.....reminds me of a Holiday in Tenerife....whilst my 3 girlfriends were bashing my ears with Deacon Blue 24/7.....every chance I would get, I'd hide their tape to play my JHJ....Now I can have it on cd...wahooooooooo....Love it!!!!...:0)

5.0 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS CLASSIC 25 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
It is rare indeed for all parts to be perfectly in place in the making of a pop album. But such a case is 'Turn back the clock,' where classy songs, superb arrangements and a sympathetic, technically flawless production coincide to create A TIMELESS CLASSIC.
As with all the best pop songs, there is an inbuilt tension between lyrics and melody. Here, we have lyrics that reflect sadly on the past ("so much for your promises," "memories of girlish purity," "remembering my yesterdays," "I wonder where the summer's gone," "all that remains are photographs," etc.) allied to music that is bright, melodic and slap bang up-to-date. The result: sheer magic!
If there's one flaw, to my mind, it's that the five non-single tracks fail to match the standard of the hits (also five, in number). Otherwise, it's hard to fault an album that, in my opinion, will endure - and increase - in popularity for many years to come.
P.S. I would not agree that one necessarily needs to be 'into' groups like ABC, Tears For Fears, etc. in order to appreciate this album. I am a 60's buff, primarily, but like to think I recognise quality music when I hear it.
