Product Description

Product Description

This course is aimed at beginners in written and spoken Turkish, as well as those who want to develop an existing knowledge of the language. Sixteen carefully graded, interlocking units each introduce new language structures firmly embedded in a functional context, demonstrating how the language is put to use in everyday situations. Each unit begins with an opening dialogue accompanied by simple comprehension questions and notes about the language or Turkish culture. A small number of language points are fully explained and illustrated by examples, and exercises are included to test your learning. At the end of each chapter a shorter dialogue is linked to the opening one.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best Turkish course on the market, 14 Mar 2006

I've been learning Turkish for six years now, and am reasonably fluent. In that time I've encountered many language courses and Teach Yourself Turkish is the best I've come across. It's also one of the best in the Teach Yourself series.

It provides a good grounding in the basic structure of the language and key vocab in the first 8 chapters. It explains things clearly without getting lost in complex grammatical terms. With a bit of determination you could probably get through this section in 6-8 weeks by yourself in a little spare time. Combine this with a few stock tourist phrases from a guidebook and Turkey is your oyster.

Where it does lose it's way a little bit is in the second half of the course, where it tries to cover a little too much material for the space it has. Because of this the explanation can get muddier, and the subject matter is presented a little bit too densely for easy self study.

While my Turkish is now well beyond the level of this course, it was an important part in helping me get to this level.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners., 12 May 2007

This CD is very good in the beginning, for those who have just started learning Turkish and will help you learn all the basics, for example, hello, and how are you. However...I would really reccommend buying this CD without the paper back book that comes with it, as it can sometimes be hard how to know how to say a word without the spelling. After this, i would reccommend buying the PDQ linguaphone course.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this supplier at all costs, 4 Mar 2011

I should have been suspicious from the beginning. Spintetinglers gave me a ludicrously long delivery time for this item to be shipped from the USA to the UK. And, guess what? It never arrived. If you check through the reviews you will see the same story from lots of other buyers - items delayed or lost in the post. I'm not convinced that it was ever despatched but, either way, Spintetinglers had the use of my payment for several weeks, before I requested a refund. I won't be using them again, and I suggest that you don't.
