The story is named for Alan Turing; a brilliant mathematician who proposed an idea concerning the behaviour of what has become known as Artificial Intelligence. The plot is set in an indeterminate future and involves a man (Jon Carlson) who was training to be a soldier controlling new types of smart weaponry. He is dismissed from the forces, and takes up helping other people; but then gets involved in the secretive world of the arms race.
Parts of the story involve the concept of people living in a virtual world and this seems to have been inspired by the film "The Matrix"; although that was partially inspired by an earlier book by Phillip K Dick. This is perhaps not as outlandish as might seem; there have been numerous studies of the behaviour of "video gamers" and with the constant improvements being made, it seems quite possible that we may well see the virtual concept become reality.
The story does start a bit slowly in order to get you familiarised with the world that Jon is part of and to help you understand some of the imperatives that drive individuals. However, the second half of the book is full of action and I found it quite gripping. This is the first story by this author, and I would really like to see more, as I think that he has a good style and tells a great story.
I have marked it down slightly as the e-book has a large number of spelling and grammatical errors (mixing up your and you're are pretty basic issues). But that doesn't spoil it too much when the story is as enjoyable as this. I would suggest that it might even been suitable as a plot for a film; certainly it's far better than some of the trash that is currently being produced.
If you are a fan of SF, or just enjoy a well written, intelligent story, then you won't want to miss this book. Well worth downloading, especially as it is free.
