Book Description

13 Feb 2003
Sir John Norton-Griffiths was one of a breed of adventurer, pioneer, entrepreneur and soldier whose like is very seldom seen. From mining rich seams in South Africa he went on to lead the gallant miners who burrowed deep under enemy lines during the Great War. Always a controversial figure, he died in mysterious circumstances. This is the story of a true maverick, a formidable force and legend wherever he went.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating 11 Jan 2011
Not a classic maybe but a nice little piece about a really unusual person and the Western Front and Rumania stuff is excellent. No other book I know of covers this aspect. I bought two copies over the years, one as a well-received present for a WW1 buff. NB Definitely a period piece (the man not the book) the politically correct may not entirely approve of some of the reported speech from the 1890s as quoted, but a great story.

4.0 out of 5 stars An epic book about an epic person 14 Oct 2013

If there was a film made of Norton Griffiths, most people would think it far fetched. Bridgland has woven history and biography into a marvellous book.

I bought it to know more about the underground tunnelling war of WWI. NG was the father of this. I discovered a most remarkable man and a wonderful author.

A superb book and story.
