More About the Author

"There isn't often a day when you won't find me without a crochet hook or my knitting needles in my hands! Turning these loves into a full-time career that fulfills my desire for creativity is like a dream come true."

Kim Guzman is an award-winning teacher and crochet pattern designer. She writes a variety of patterns including garments, home decor, accessories and gift items.

Kim has authored 12 books, most of them in her favorite form of crochet--Tunisian crochet. Tunisian crochet offers Kim more flexibility in her designing due to its unique look, which can mimic knitting or weaving, depending on the stitches used while still maintaining crochet's ease. Being able to combine these looks together in one project brings all needlework together and makes Tunisian crochet a favorite among many.

You may often hear that Tunisian crochet is the "step-child" of knitting and crochet. "Not so," says Kim, "it's more like the best of both worlds!"

Her latest books, The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Tunisian Crochet and Tunisian Cables to Crochet, offer something for everyone for beginner to advanced.

Kim's portfolio of her work can be found at www.kimguzman.com. Or, you can follow her on her blog where she discusses the day-to-day activities of designing as well as her newly-found pastime of canning and preserving food.

All of the patterns in this book are listed as intermediate 3 out of 4. The patterns are nothing special and basically done in strips. There are 11 projects but nothing I would really want. You get patterns for a couple of scarves and some fingerless mitts as well as a couple of shawls and the cable is used over the whole pattern in many cases meaning the joining of a number of strips. The book does show you the method of making cables in Tunisian work and there is a variety of cables to learn but what I was hoping for was a good way to add cable to other items I am making. I can work this out but had hoped for guidance in this. If you want to learn how to do cable this book will show you the basics. But you are on your own if you wanted to introduce these cables in to jumpers or cardigans unless you want to do strips and sew them in. Since the book was a reasonable price for the contents I don't find this an issue.

Although the patterns in this book look wonderful, I have found some of the basic stitch instructions rather confusing. I was stuck at the very first page after doing the TYPICAL FOUNDATION as it then doesn't show you how to do the return pass. I have only managed to find my way around by using youtube tuition as well. I have crocheted all my life so am not inexperienced but I don't think this is a book for a complete beginner. I shall persevere because the patterns do look lovely.

Fantastic little book, yes, more like a large leaflet, but with lovely pictures and detailed instructions. Four starts not five due to no diagrams of stitches, only words, and as such there is no way to produce a swatch, you have to create the pattern as written without seeing if you like the stitch first. The designs shown are beautiful and I enjoyed the instruction. You tube for extra help required., just a little bit even as a seasoned crocheter I was a bit confused at some of the pictures. but on the whole, definitely a keeper, and one I have tried a few more I will no doubt be on the way to figuring out more.

Not a real "big book" about tunisian crochet,
not a fundamental guide to this "technique".
Tunisian cables are explained through the web in other ways.

I was under the misapprehension that this would teach tunisian stitches in order to be able to do tunisian cables. Not so- a basic knowledge of tunisian crochet is needed first, so NOT a book for beginners. A couple of extra pages showing the basics would have been sufficient. I am a very experienced crocheter and knitter, but this book sadly didn't teach me a new technique, so I returned it.

Very slim volume. I was hoping for practical patterns not the usual scarves and pot holders. I have seen better online for free.

I liked the book because it shows many ways of making cables using Tunisian crochet. I think it is a good buy.

I am just picking up the technique of Tunisian crochet and this is a very well-loved book already. Great for avid crochet workers - especially now that you can buy the flexible Afghan Tunisian carbonised crochet hooks for such a great price!
