4.0 out of 5 stars A useful introduction, 27 April 2009
By
Having spent seven days driving throughout Tunisia relying on this guide and a Michelin roadmap, I'd say it makes a very useful companion. The descriptions of landscapes and communities are sensitively handled and sometimes amusing; the sections on the history and geography of the country are intelligently-written and accessible.

As usual with LP guides it is aimed more at those who want to turn their face away from mass tourism and organised tours, and points the reader in the direction of lesser-seen sights, locations and accommodation in addition to those that are already obvious and popular. In some cases we found that hotels had been smartened-up since the writing of the guide, though this had not generally had much effect on price. This was also the case with some roads in the interior (Dorsale Tunisienne) - several were described as unmade in the book but are in fact now asphalted and suitable for all vehicles.

Since this (and other Lonely Planet guides) have traditionally been aimed more at backpackers using public transport than motorists, the town centre maps are sometimes not very useful for navigating by car when arriving, but are good for pedestrian use once you are there.

On the whole a valuable companion on the trip and a pleasure to read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty poor overall, 9 April 2009

This guide was much worse than I expected. I only give it two stars because the maps were quite useful. Much of the price information was wrong and one museum which it raved about had been closed for two years when we got there. A friend had the lost planet guide which was better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tunisia - No one should go there without this Lonely Planet Guide, 1 Jan 2010
By

The Lonely Plant Guide series are without doubt one the of the finest publications to give you the low-down on the places you are are likely to visit. All of the guides use travellers who know the area thoroughly so they can provide you with all the "mundane" but essential details about the area.

If you are new to a country, there is so much that many of the so called guide books take for granted so when you land you feel all at sea over the simple things like opening hours, trains, buses, local customs, etc.

The Lonely Plant Guides include a fair amount of cultural history as well to give you the perspective and to prevent you from making obvious "gaffs".
The tours they suggest are realistic and enable you to plan some sight-seeing that can be accomplished to add value to your holiday experience.

Even if you have business in a foreign land your time will be precious and the concise directions and sound advice will help you to achieve your outcome in the most efficient way.
