I was keen to try out TuneUp as my laptop takes an age to load up and it isn't particularly old. Sure, it is still running XP and doesn't have the fastest processing speed and not much RAM, but it should'nt take just under 3 minutes to load up and be ready to use!

It was easy enough to install and the nice thing is that you can use the same CD to install TuneUp on to 3 machines. This is very good of them to recognise that many households have more than one PC.

This will work on XP, Vista and even 7.

Once it installs, it asks to run a quick check on your PC to see where it can make any improvements.

It looks at 4 key areas:

* Maintain the System - by optimizing system shutdown and start-up, defrag disks, clean systems registry (scary stuff) etc.

* Increase performance - by gaining disk space, uninstalling programs etc.

* Fix Problems - such as missing links, restoring deleted files and so on.

* Customize Windows - making changes to the way Windows looks on your PC e.g. changing from smooth rounded graphics to the old-school Windows 95 look, or putting a different 'start-up' screen from the usual Windows logo.

There is a reasonable amount of functionality in this program and it is relatively easy to use and navigate regardless of your adeptness with computers.

There is plenty of explanation for every change that you might make and if you totally mess things up, there is a 'restore' option.

Having said all that, I don't find that my laptop is any faster having installed TuneUp and having run all it's recommendations.

Having made a couple of changes on the start-up front, it now loads up at 2:30seconds rather than 2:54seconds. So I suppose that is quite an improvement. Maybe my expectations were too high and what I really need is a new laptop!

Would I recommend it?

If your PC works fine, this will help to keep it working fine for longer. If it is slow and you can't afford a new PC then this would be a good place to start in trying to improve it's performance.

I have to be honest and say I have no idea if this software is working. I am no system expert (get by and have reasonable knowledge) and have a mid range laptop.

I updated to all it's suggestions but I just can't notice any beneficial increase in system performance.

The second day it was running I had to restore my system to a date prior to its installation.

I tried again and still nothing to report of the system performance/improvement.

I think I will just uninstall it.

Most reviewers seem happy with it so maybe my system couldn't be improved that much.

I installed this on my brand new Win 7 PC. As soon as I ran the "automatic maintenance" program I had problems. Fonts were displaying wrongly in MS Word and PDF files. I went to the support website and discovered there are just a handful of FAQs available, and nothing remotely like my problem. I logged a support call ... and didn't get any answer for two days!

In that time I managed to work out how to Undo the changes the software had made. I *think* it must have deleted my Times New Roman font, but I can't be sure, because (as I eventually found out when contacted by support) the software does not create a log file of what it has done. I find this astonishing. When it first ran, it claimed to have deleted over 300 entries from my registry. I've no idea what those were (and no way of finding out!) But it seems odd to me that a new PC, with hardly any software installed, would really need that.

Eventually the support people suggested that I upgrade to the latest patch of the software. After that experience, I decided to uninstall it instead.
