The first half of this disc features the 17th century Schnitger organ at Norden. We then move to the Raphaelis instrument of similar age at Roskilde. Franz Tunder was Buxtehude's predecessor at the Marienkirche, Lubeck. Several of his organ compositions have been left to us: Foccroulle plays all of them apart from two of the chorale fantasias and an incomplete Praeludium.

This is rather stern music and it takes a while to get used to it, especially the longer pieces. The performer is kept very busy and there is much hand-crossing and sudden changes of manual requiring a cool head and a flawless playing technique. As usual, Foccroulle takes it all in his stride from the 'organo pleno' pieces to the more delicate solos and echo effects. I do not rate this CD as outstanding, but that is because I prefer my Tunder mixed with other Baroque composers. However, this is a fine performance and a clear recording. There is a very helpful booklet, too, giving the specs of both instruments and all the registrations used. By the way, if you like this disc you will also enjoy the companion Ricecar CD of Foccroulle playing the entire works of Reinken and Bruhns- but that is another story.
