Product Description

Product Description

Azriel Feuerstein, a 16-year-old boy, was the sole survivor of his family after they were deported, along with the rest of the Jews during the Second World War German occupation of Hungary, to the human slaughterhouse of Auschwitz Nazi Death Camp. The author penned most of these compelling words as events happened and within months of being liberated from Belsen Concentration Camp by the British Army in 1945. This first time told story makes for a gripping read. This book radically differs from the usual "Holocaust Memoir" by the way the author merges the, sometimes humorous, concentration camp narrative with his conversations with an elderly Swedish lady, Froken (Miss) Ulle, who worked at the boarding school that took him in after the dangerously thin 25-kilogram teenager spent months of convalescence in Swedish hospitals. A father and grandfather, Azriel lives in Israel with his family.

About the Author

Azriel Feuerstein was born on St George's Day on 17 April 1928 at three o'clock in the morning in Ko'ice, Slovakia (or 'Kassa' in Hungarian). Deported with his family to Auschwitz Nazi death camp when he was only 16 years old. Liberated from Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp by the British Army in April 1945. In 1967 Azriel was an anti-aircraft gunner in the Six-Day Arab-Israeli War. Now a father and grandfather, Azriel lives in Israel.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Tumbler, 12 Sep 2008

A story from an Auschwitz survivor who felt that as he has become older he and others who have survived the death camp and all that went with it, have a duty to record the events before its too late.
The author wrote about his experiences so honestly - he gives us some detail at the end of his life with his wife and I am grateful to know that he managed to live his life so well with his family - despite everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and surprising, perfectly written story, 5 Dec 2007

To read a book that deals with the Holocaust is intimidating. Reading this book, however, has no such effect: in a lively manner, with cynicism and without any self importance, the author tells his unbelievable story. This is an amazing novel of a 16 year old boy, who lives through a year of hell on earth, in which he loses everything he has, but his identity. The story of his surviving almost diminishes when compared to the strength needed in rebuilding his life again. A must read book!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Tumbler, 3 Dec 2007
This review is from: The Tumbler: A 16-year-old Boy's Live Chronicle of Auschwitz, Belsen, Hanover, Hildesheim, Wolgsberg and Wustegiersdorf Nazi Death Camps (Paperback)
This book is very well written. It lets you feel the horrors of that era on every page. The story line moves you to go on reading very skillfully and you cannot help but root for the hero to somehow make it. It is a fascinating read and I highly recommend it. I hope we'll see more books written by this author.
Eva.
