Book Description

A deliciously eccentric series of anecdotes, Tuffers' Cricket Tales was a Sunday Times bestseller in hardback. Phil Tufnell, aka 'Tuffers', is the much-loved English cricketer from the 1990s who has now become one of this country's favourite broadcasters. Not cast from the same mould as other players of his generation, Tufnell became a cult figure for his unorthodox approach to the game ... and to life in general. 'Tuffers' Cricket Tales' is a collection of the great man's favourite cricket stories that will amuse and inform in equal measure. Tufnell's unmistakably distinctive voice, as heard to such good effect on 'Test Match Special', steers fans through dozens and dozens of terrifically entertaining and insightful anecdotes, garnered from his 25-year playing and broadcasting career. He introduces a cast of genuinely colourful characters found in dressing-rooms and commentary boxes from around the world, and in the process offers a uniquely warm and quirky homage to his sport. A perfect Father's Day gift for all cricket fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuinely hilarious! 24 May 2012
This book proves once and for all that Tuffers is a national treasure. In his inimitable style, Tuffers recalls his many antics from his years as a player, as well as reflections on the modern game, including the 'special' deliveries he wishes he'd had up his sleeve back in the day... There's even insight into his subsequent career as a presenter, all textbook Tuffers. I loved the 'Tuffersauraus', featuring choice words and phrases from Tuffers' distinctive brand of commentary.

The beauty of this book is that even people who only like cricket a little, love Tuffers a lot. A winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, hilarious and insightful 24 May 2012
I finished the book this afternoon and had to post a review. It was brilliant! Phil's stories are classics, I've learnt so much about what goes on in the dressing room before, during and after a match that I'll never look on a match in the same way.

Fans of cricket and fans of the man himself will love the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read 7 Jun. 2012
By Syriat TOP 500 REVIEWER
Tuffers' Cricket Tales is a very enjoyable read which you can dip in and out of. It isn't a biography (that already exists) and it isn't in chronological order. But its split into easy paragraphs and chapters with a tale or related section (top 11 spinners for example).

The book is split into three sections. The first being Phil's test match career and cricketing experience. The second section covers Phil's TV career and his life as a celebrity and finally the last section covers his Test Match Special career and thoughts on the modern game. I found the first section the best (being a huge cricket fan). There were lots of stories of life at Middlesex and playing for England. Lots of stories of the team and Phil's antics. Not all stories directly involve Phil. But they are funny (not laugh out loud funny often though) and give an insight into the England team and the characters. The second section is a bit of a lighter section on life after Help I'm A Celebrity and other TV appearances. Not too much detail here but some anecdotes and insights. The TMS section makes for good reading and the part which analyses quite why England are successful now and weren't when Phil was playing make for interesting reading.

Phil never really hits the belly laughing moments I thought he would with this book but its amusing and such an easy joyful read its hard not to love it. I did get confused as it dips all over his career and this lack of chronology sent me heading for Wiki or other sources to get a bit more info. For that reason I think its only four stars and not five for me. Its a great book, although non cricket lovers may not enjoy it as much as it can be quite cricket centred and cricket lovers may not enjoy the section on his TV career as much as the rest.I would recommend it for fans of the game and urge a little caution for those a fan of the man on TV.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tuffers serves up a treat 29 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not afraid to tell it as it is, Tuffers takes a journey through the pre-Central Contract era (ie. when England were terrible) and offers up some brilliant anecdotes and insight along the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like having a natter with a good mate 24 Jun. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Phil Tufnell is well on the way to becoming a British institution and this book will certainly help him on his way to that designation. The book contains a seemingly never-ending stream of stories, many of which are worth savouring, from his days as a County and Test match cricketer, his spell on TMS and others from his broader media adventures and experience.

Perhaps he has spread himself a bit thin but there is something in here for everyone although the title is a little bit misleading given how wide he ranges in his story matter.

I think he has got away with it this time and provided his readers with much amusement and insight but he will need to come up with a new format if he is to justify another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tuffers tickles my timbers 24 May 2012
This book is an absolute hoot. There's a funny story on pretty much every single page, and the warmth of Tuffers' heart - and the astuteness of his cricketing brain - shine through. An absolute must for all cricket fans, and a brilliant pressie for Father's Day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read in 24h 16 Aug. 2012

Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I'd intended to read a few pages each night after putting kids to bed, but picked up Tuffers book one Sunday evening and by the following night I'd read the whole book. Had to put it down a few times as I was laughing so hard I cried. I think cricketers may relate to the stories involving team mates more, but it's still a very enjoyable read for anyone who may know anything at all about the great man himself. Wish I could go for a few jars with Tuffers, it'd be one of them nights you'd never forget. Yes, you know the ones I mean ...
