For Morgan Hiller (James Spader), it s tough enough being the new kid in school. But when he tangles with a local gang, he becomes the lone target of some rough revenge. And when he falls for the gang leader s girlfriend (Kim Richards), the situation turns from dangerous to deadly. Welcome to TUFF TURF -- where enemies are made, reputations are earned and love is the most risky affair of all. Robert Downey Jr. co-stars in this powerful 80s high school drama that features live performances by The Jim Carroll Band and Jack Mack & The Heart Attack, plus songs by Marianne Faithfull, Southside Johnny, Lene Lovich and more.

I was hoping this slice of extreme 80's would hold up and by God it did!

Sure some of the pop video styling is dated (as are the fashions!) and some of the 80's teen styling/attitudes (not to mention James Spader's piano ballad!) now have a bit of a wince effect...but overall this is still top notch, unpretentious FUN.

James Spader is an absolute delight as the rebel teen new kid, Robert Downey Jr is good value as his musician friend and his bare chested, eye liner, drumming is a hoot!
Kim Richards (who re-appeared in the excellent "Black Snake Mona" recently) is as cute as a sexual button as the, crimped hair, object of Spader's affection and Paul Mones (later a Van Damme screenplay writer!!) is great as the villain of the piece.
Nice turn by prolific Hollywood veteran Matt Clark as Spader's Dad too.

Some of the music has dated, but some is still great fun with a nice live turn by Jim Carrol and his band (with Downey on drums!) and a couple of wonderful 'Blues Brothers' style Rhythm 'n' Blues numbers by 'Jack Mack and the Heart Attack'.
A fun film. Just damn well......FUN.

Hmmm. Obviously, the gods of fate thought that it was not much of a challenge for James Spader to play a bright rebel from New England. So, said gods sent him the role of a singing, dancing, bicycling, bright rebel from New England.
Well, sort of singing. The "be bop a lula" bit sounds like his voice. The actual song sounds like someone else sang it, although the credits don't clarify matters. I don't believe for a second that it was really him playing the piano! He is better at dancing and cycling.
So, it's clear why Spader's fans like it. What about everyone else? A search of the internet revealed 2 other things that fans raved about. One is Kim Richards, and in particular the fact she has really long hair in the film. Yes, on one level, that is superficial, but people are entitled to their personal preferences! The other is the sound track. One of the songs, "People That Died", was still making its mark two decades after "Tuff Turf" was released!
Is the film as a whole any good? There are three opinions.
(1) This film is so bad, it's good. Even the title is misspelt.
(2) The juxtaposition of cheesy humour, romance and ultra-violence just does not work.
(3) This is a very underrated film. The Tuff gang maybe misspelt their name on purpose.
I cannot decide which opinion is the most valid. So, here is what Calico Cat and I liked and disliked. You will have to watch it for yourself to decide whether it is good, indifferent or hilariously bad.
We disliked the part where Morgan (Spader) shoots the flies. This makes him seem nastier than he does during the rest of the film.
We thought Frankie (Kim Richards) is quite a good heroine, perhaps a little vulnerable, but not a doormat.

A youthful James Spader heads up this urban tale which echoes elements of west side story and culminates in a high noon scenario where the new kid falls foul of the local gang leader. The soundtrack is pure eighties and we even get to see Spader sing whilst pretending to play the piano. Robert Downey Jr lends very able support as his sidekick and Kim Richards has a strong screen presence as the love interest. There's nothing new to the screenplay and once things get going you could write the conclusion yourself but its a fun ride all the same and well worth a look. Watch out for the glaring error during the final fight where a member of the production crew sticks their arm in shot to steady a wayward piece of rope! Its yonks since I've seen this but Spader's superior turn in the Blacklist has rekindled my interest in his varied and interesting career. There seemed to be a bunch of these movies during the eighties; 3:15 a time to die is another fitting example starring the ever popular Adam Baldwin.

Tuff Turf Is a very dated film but if not concerned with the asthetics the acting is great and a chance to see Robert Downey J.R ( IRONMAN 1-3) and James Spader(Stargate) in one of their earliest roles! Always loved the film and would recommend it to any film fan. Spader stars as a teen trying to fit in in a new area but runs into trouble when he comes to the defence of a mugging victim which starts a chain of events and love interest to change his life and others.

James Spader is amazing, as usual in this film. It is most definitely one of the best 80's films I have purchased and actually sat through, it's exciting and fun and perfect for anyone who remembers the tough high school days. Maybe not as tough as Spader has it, but this is just fantastic.

It'a one of my all time favorite. I really like this movie and sent it to a friend to watch. As my friend received it it was damaged and only played for a few minutes. I am really disappointed in the handling of my purchase.
