Like being there! 10 Oct 2009
By Hywel James TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent live recording of the still much lamented Tubby Hayes (1935-1973). Indeed the disc is so good that it is like being there, at The Dancing Slipper, in Nottingham, in December 1963. Although the cd is mono, don't let that put you off. The sound divides nicely between two speakers (or more if you have a truly sophisticated set up), though I wouldn't advise headphones because Jimmy Deuchar's trumpet will have your brains spilling out after a couple of tracks. Played on speakers the music sounds entirely realistic and in a natural, three-dimensional space. There is an affectionate sleeve-note, written in 1980 for the original issue, by Ronnie Scott.

Tubby Hayes was a genuine British original of enormous gifts. Buy this cd and enjoy the music of a player who left us long before his time.

For people of my advanced age, most of the 'great' jazzmen are dying off (John Dankworth and Herb Ellis most recently) or, like Tubby, gone these many years. None of which makes it any less of a pleasure to come across an album one didn't know existed.

For me, this is one such, and I really prefer Tubby live, as he is here. This brings back fine memories of hearing him and his contemporaries In London when I was a schoolboy, and the whole quintet roars away most satisfyingly on this CD. I've knocked off one star because of the entirely unfair personal prejudice that I don't like him on flute so much - perhaps the vibes were too unwieldy to get in the back of the van for the trip to Nottingham?! Nothing here not to enjoy.

great uk sounds 29 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
1. Live performance from 1963
2. Four extended tracks
3. Tubby on ts and flute
4. Jimmy Deuchar also on the rare mellophonium!
5. Quite decent recording. Some occasional distortion :that's why 4 stars.
6. Very fine exiting music.
7. Note the use of the mellophonium, a short-lived instrument like a french horn but sounding something between a fluegelhorn, french horn and trombone. It was used by The Stan Kenton Orchstra round 1960 for a couple of years. It seemed to be difficult to stay in tune.
8. Recommended.
