A Great Series,
By kaya j (U.K.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tsubasa Volume 1: v. 1 (Paperback)
I first picked up Tsubasa as a fan of Clamp's Cardcaptor Sakura, after hearing that the series somehow overlapped. Tsubasa does feature Sakura and Syaoran (as well as other characters) from Cardcaptor Sakura, but they belong to an alternative world/dimension. If you haven't read Cardcaptor Sakura it doesn't matter at all, since Tsubasa's plot is totally independent. If you have read Cardcaptor Sakura, don't expect a sequel or any continuation story-wise. However, a lot of old characters do appear, which is nice and sometimes amusing. In Tsubasa, Sakura is a princess and Syaoran is her childhood friend and the son of an archaeologist. In the first volume Sakura basically loses her memories, which take the form of feathers, dispersed across various alternate worlds. Syaoran vows to restore retrieve and restore Sakura's memories. They're joined by Fai, a powerful magician and Kurogane, a warrior, who both have their reasons for also needing to travel across different dimensions. Together, they all make a joint deal with the space-time witch Yuko (who stars in Clamp's xxxHolic), who enables them to travel across different worlds. Various characters from other Clamp series have cameos/ roles within the worlds they visit but the core group is made up of Sakura, Syaoran, Fai, Kurogane and Mokona (from Magic Knight Rayearth). The basic premise of chapters/volumes is the group's arrival and search for Sakura's memories in each place/ dimension they visit. Not surprisingly, Clamp has a lot of fun with the different settings and time periods possible. Overall Tsubasa is a great series. All the characters are well defined and as the series progresses it gains depth as we find out more about Syaoran, Fai and Kurogane's pasts. The stories are entertaining and funny, while at the same time some plots are emotional and moving. It's a good balance though! Anyway, whether you've read Cardcaptor Sakura or not, you won't regret giving Tsubasa a chance. It's getting more and more interesting as the series progresses; I'm definitely a fan anyway!
