Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

Despite the endless ream of sub-standard situation songs, which Presley had to plough through during the 1960's, contrary to general opinion, not all of the soundtrack material was dross. And here are 2 of his better movie soundtracks on one disk. Viva Las Vegas had a strong collection of tunes from the Boss Nova rythms of it's title track to the rythm and blues romp of "What'd I Say". He shares duet with co-star on "The Lady Loves Me", and "You're the Boss" which is issued here for the first time. Elvis mastery of ballads is evident on the slower tunes of both soundtracks, but none stand out, except for his operatic cover of Santa Lucia. Throughout both soundtracks Elvis is in fine voice! Roustabout was not quite as good a collection although It's A Wonderful World was nominated by the Academy for best song 1964. Another great track is Little Egypt. The ending to Carny town has been left to finish with a bluesy ending rather than the original fade out. "Hard Knocks" is the closest he gets to rocking, and he could do that with the greatest of ease. The emphasis of these films was fun, and that is what these soundtracks are: Fun! So don't take them to seriously.

Having already reviewed Love in Las Vagas I will confine this to Roustabout only, but I do have the double feature c.d which is worth the cash because you get 2 albums, while there are some people who say that the stand alone version of Love in Las Vegas is better than the couble feature , this is not the case with Roustabout.
This is a pleasent enough album to listern to even the film tie in tracks dont sound to bad , but I did't find anything to get to excited about.I recently watched the film (d.v.d given away in side a newspaper) and its fairy likeable film and the songs do seem to tie in well with the film , but that is often the case when Elvis character plays a singer.Mostly decent tracks but i'm not sure how poison ivy league fits in to the film or soundtrack, as for the other film theme tracks Its carnival time and Carny town well this is not what Elvis should be singing but they do fit well into the film.Hard knocks is intresting because to me it sounds like its from Elvis 1958/59 peroid , maybe it was cut for King Creole.Overall its not a bad album none soundtrack fans will problerly find it aceptable , even more so if you buy the double feature series.

It's quite obvious that the soundtrack to "Viva Las Vegas" carries this 'Double Features' release, even though "Roustabout" was a No. 1 soundtrack in the states in 1965 somehow, believe it or not!

I'm not too keen on songs about a Carnival especially when they are "Carny Town", "It's Carnival Time" and other songs about 'Popcorn, Peanuts and Cotton Candy'!

For people like me who saw Elvis movies at the cinema ( movie theatre)when they were school kids this is a charming reminder of sunny fun filled afternoons.I was in short pants when these movies came out and the bright colour photography , cheery songs and jokes were just what we kids wanted and lapped up ( along with our Kia-Ora Orange drink and peanuts). They were fun movies for happy kids - watching more recent musical movies like 'Grease' and 'High School Musical 'and ' Hair Spray' I cannot understand why Elvis musicals are so criticised - they are just as good as the others.
