Product Description

Originally released in 1979, this album helped to usher in the 1980s dancehall sound. It solidified Johnny Osbourne’s popularity, and he would go on to become one of the most prolific of the dancehall reggae singers. Recorded in Jamaica and produced by Clement Dodd, Johnny was presented with a plethora of classic Studio One rhythms from the vaults on which to record. The legendary foundation label was undergoing a creative renaissance with new prototypical dancehall albums by Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minott, Michigan & Smiley, Willie Williams and of course Johnny Osbourne. This deluxe edition includes all 10 album tracks, remastered from the original tapes. A further six tracks – extended mixes, a dee-jay version, a dub version, and a bonus track from the period – have been added. The liner notes include a recent interview with Cleveland “Clevie” Browne, of Steely & Clevie fame. Tracks: Truths And Rights / Children Are Playing / Can’t Buy Love / Jah Promise / Nah Skin Up / We Need Love / Eternal Peace / Sing Jay Stylee / Loe Jah So / Let Me In / Jealousy Heartache And Pain / Luanda – Dub Specialist / West Gone Black – Jah Jesco & Jucey Bravo / Truths And Rights (extended mix) / Sing Jay Stylee (extended mix) / Can’t Buy Love; Swing Easy.

Have to agree with the first reviewer regarding the sloppy way this has been put together. I've dozens of Heartbeat CD's and while I'm loathe to criticse people that do such valuable work, this is not the first time a rather slip-shod attitude has been apparent on an re-issue.

What makes the whole 'Jah Promise' episode even more bizzare is that there is a perfectly good take of it issued on 'The Best of Studio One' last year by......Heartbeat!

Anyway, if it needs saying 5 out of 5 for the music (any reggae fan needs this LP), considerably less for this re-issue. However, if you don't have this record already, it is still worth a purchase, as the music is so great.

Straight off the bat I have to say Johnny Osbourne's "Truth and Rights" is without doubt in the top 10 reggae albums ever but this 'expanded' CD reissue really doesn't do it justice. To quote Honest Jon's Records on the subject, "Talk about an open goal, with so much great Johnny Osbourne at Brentford Road still un-revived, this comp is a miserably wasted opportunity. Honestly, pretty pathetic -- but still, a few extras and (dodgy) extendeds...". Couldn't put it better myself but it gets worse on track 4; 'Jah Promise' one of the best tracks on the album there is an audible tape glitch 1:18 minutes into the song (sounding like the source tape momentarily being rewound). This is utterly disgraceful in a CD that claims to be "remastered from the original tapes" with no caveat emptor about sound quality (sound restoration has come such a long way that such glitches can easily be eliminated) and marketed at a full price. Honestly Heartbeat Records really needs to tighten up their act since their last Studio One compilation "The Gladiators: The Studio One Singles" had an incorrect tracklisting (which I believe has now finally been corrected). It is a real shame with the supremely rich Studio One catalogue to choose from that Heartbeat are so hit-and-miss with some of their stuff being admittedly brilliant (eg. the "When Rhythm Was King" compilation) but other stuff so slip-shod (eg. the "Six The Hard Way" compilation, a real dog's dinner that one) and doubly a pity now it seem that the UK based Soul Jazz label appears to have given up issuing Studio One product perhaps thinking the well is dry (in which case they'd be wrong).

Being a roots music fan of some thirty years I am ashamed to say this classic gem slipped passed me unnoticed when it was released.I am familiar with J.O. s dance hall classics (eg Ice Cream Love etc.)but this album was a little early in my personal pursuit of roots and culture, even though it sat at number 1 in the reggae charts for weeks.
Contrary to the other reviews I see little to complain about here when you get a re-mastered (yes! authentic warts and all)version of a classic album with some bonus sublime extended disco mix versions of some of the best songs. If you are worried about recording quality you are firstly missing the point of atmospheric, sweet, sweet reggae music which was constructed on a shoestring in some pretty basic studios (i.e Studio 1).Capturing the very heart of Jamaica is more important that re-mastering and filtering out any sound cut on the master tape!Secondly reggae music relies on a good vibe which can never be spoilt by a few scratches or crackles.Me vinyl collecshun still soun' nice without objecshun!
This album may be a re-release but if you don't own it, buy it,soun' irie!

I already have this album on vinyl I would describe myself as a lover and collector of Reggae music, but especialy Roots music. due to not having a turntable i have really missed listening to this album. Couldnt wait for it to arrive. this is a classic album in every sense of the word. 'Never sing love to You' 'Render your heart and not your garments' remind me of a time when i had so much to learn about life, and people.
Fantastic, The additional tracks
are somewhat superflous, but still good. however this is up there with the greats
every lover of good classic reggae a will love this album. It reminds me so much of going to blues parties as a youngster and really being moved by the words and sentiments LOVE IT LOVE IT.
