Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The vocals on Truthfully Speaking have a frosty chill. The singer, a protégé of hitmaker Dr Dre, lustily moans and wails, about a lover who turns her pages, on the sinewy Dre and DJ Quik collaboration "Addictive", but her edgy resolve and steely seductiveness undercut any notion of romance. This makes her inviting moment of passion more like a warning shot. That push and pull between distance and desire is present throughout most of this rugged effort. From the mournful lament "Bullshit" (produced by Organized Noize) to a seething, if somewhat pedantic, duet with R Kelly ("The Truth") or the loose and limber tale of a lover in prison ("Jimmy"), Truth Hurts creates her R&B in a space where men and life never fail to disappoint. Luckily, that dejected and bitter outlook makes for an often-fierce CD. --Amy Linden

BBC Review

Truth Hurts' successful chart debut with the Indian influenced single "Addictive", introduced the world to a unique sound that was swiftly emulated by other R&B and hip hop artists keen to jump on the new musical bandwagon.

The succeeding album Truthfully Speaking (executive producer Dr Dre) had the daunting task of trying to live up to the resulting hype but St Louis native Shari Watson has risen to the challenge and delivered sixty minutes of street smooth, adult soul designed with the hip hop generation in mind.

Relationship highs and lows as described on slow groove tracks "This Feeling" and "Next To Me" are familiar themes throughout and compliment songs such as "Grown" in which lyrics like "I wanna be who I am to be" or in "Queen of the Ghetto" where she sings "Speak your mind to the fullest degree, the truth will set you free..." lets the fans know that Truth Hurts is one tough woman not to be messed with.

Production ranges from sounds reminiscent of mid 1990s gangsta rap courtesy of Dre through to the laid back Philly vibe strongly associated with artists like Jill Scott.

"Benefit of The Doubt" which also features on The Wash soundtrack is one of several highlights alongside "Addictive" and the rare groove inspired "I'm Not Really Lookin'" both produced by DJ Quik. Great producers are frequent throughout this album and multi talented R Kelly lends further heavy weight input by resurrecting a slightly remixed version of his chart topping single fiesta on "The Truth" and Missy collaborator Timbaland, lays down his trademark flava on "Real". There is even a gem from east coast producer Hi Tek, best known for his work with rapper Talib Kweli.

Overall Truthfully Speaking is a quality debut performance with solid production and Truth's considerable talents as a songwriter making up for the fact that few tracks match up to the originality of the first single. There is however no questioning the calibre and tone of her operatic voice, which appears to convey the harsh sound of the streets whilst keeping the church firmly in mind.

The list of contenders for the much coveted title bestowed on Mary J as 'Queen of hip hop soul' just got one name longer.

Pure Excellence!!! 11 July 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
A brilliant knew artist is born! This CD is the best one I've brought recently. It has a taste of Dr Dre which brings some of the tunes out to their fullest. Unlike any others female artists Shari's (also known as Truth) sound is unique. It's hard to compare it to the sounds of Missy Elliot, Eve, Ms Dynamite etc because this is a mix of music. The single 'Addictive' is what encouraged me to buy the CD, also because it's produced by the talented Dr Dre. 'Addictive' is a tight tune. Dr Dre has added the blissful sounds an a Hindi (Indian) track and has collaborated the mix of the two to perfection!! A brilliant intro called 'Push Play' which features vocals by Dr Dre is followed by 'Addictive' which is then followed by twelve other tracks. The album is a mix of soul, RnB with Rap. A brilliant track called 'The Truth' which is written and produced by R Kelly, is a typical R Kelly sound which he also adds his own excellent vocals on. 'Hollywood' is a typical Dr Dre tune which of course has an excellent beat. Her very strong vocals compliment each and every track, whether it's Rap or soul. To spice up some tracks they add vocals from artists such as Kevin "Kirv" Irving and have various rappers. Out of the 14 tracks, 13 are excellent the only one which hasn't grown on me is 'Grown'. I'm very very pleased with this album, it is addictive and I recommend any Dre or RnB fan to buy this album if you want to experience a different sound by the hottest new talent.

When I heard Addictive, on a radio show one night. I immediately was intrigued. I noticed that the singer had powerful vocal talent. The song had good lyrics, and good bass. Also, i was "addicted" to the hindi background:

"Kaliyon ka chaman jabu bantha hai- Thoda Resham lagta hai, thoda shisha lagta hai -Hire moti lar the hai, thoda sona lagta hai"

Going on about her man being gorgeous and fit... This song was great. With Rakim appearing in it doing a great rap. Even Dr Dre, in the video (after all , he produced her) so i went out on a limb and bought the album.

First, i just listened to addictive over and over again, as the name is very true to the song itself, but as time unfolded I listened to more and more of the songs - some fast, some slow. All excellent!!

One of the 2 best new RnB singers of 2002 (along with tweet - in my opinion) this album is a must buy for any one who likes addictive!
