More About the Author

I've been writing, in one way or another, for as long as I can remember. I was always a big reader, mostly because my parents were. I used to get frustrated with my mom because she bought me books for Christmas when what I really wanted were the gifts my friends got, things like sweaters and jewelry. But I did love to read. When I was eight or nine my parents gave me an old manual typewriter and a little desk in the corner of our den, and I'd sit there and type up my stories. I was the kind of kid that people always sighed over and said, "She has such a wild imagination," which usually meant "I wish Sarah would try to stick to the truth." I have a tendency to embellish: I think it's just a weakness of fiction writers. Once you learn how to make a story better, it's hard not to do it all the time."The books I read when I was teenager, the good ones anyway, have stuck more in my mind than anything since. I still love books, but while I couldn't tell you complete plots of novels I read even six months ago, I do remember even the smallest descriptive details from Lois Lowry's A Summer to Die or Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. I think it was because back then books were still somewhat new to me, and when I found an author who seemed to say just what I was feeling, it really struck me and resonated. I hope that my books do that for the people who read them: I think it's the best thing to which any writer can aspire. "As far as my other life, my non-writing life, I live in the country with my husband, some lizards, and two dogs who are completely spoiled and rule me completely. I like to work in my garden---although I have not yet perfected the art of keeping everything alive----and, in my weaker moments, shop. I have a bit of an addiction to the Gap clearance rack, to be honest. I have this strange need to buy huge quantities of black pants. How many pairs of black pants does one person need? (Obviously for me, the answer is 11 and counting. But I digress.) What else can I tell you? I love Starbucks mochas but they make me way hyper. I subscribe to too many magazines. I make a mean bean salad. I could go on, but the truth is, my books are much more exciting than I am, and that's a good thing. It's always more fun to make stuff up anyway."

Amazon Review

With her sixth novel, award-winning author Sarah Dessen offers up another generous helping of finely crafted storytelling about real teens dealing with real life. In The Truth About Forever, when asked how she is coping with her father's death, invariably 17-year-old Macy Queen's answer is "fine", when nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality, she is drowning in grief while maintaining a flawless façade of good grades and unblemished behaviour. Though she feels lost when her boyfriend heads to "Brain Camp" for the summer, she finds herself a job with the quirky Wish Catering crew, and meets "sa-woon"-worthy Wes, whose chaotic lifestyle is in direct opposition to her own. As the two share their stories over the summer, Macy realises she can no longer keep her feelings on ice. Though it feels like her future ended with her dad's death, Macy learns that forever is all about beginnings.

Dessen charts Macy's navigation of grief in such an honest way it will touch every reader who meets her. All of the Dessen trademarks are here: a girl in transition, a wonderfully fleshed-out cast of secondary characters, and of course, the luminous, powerful writing itself. The Truth About Forever will more than satisfy Dessen's legion of fans, and will win her countless more as well. For ages 12 and over. --Jennifer Hubert,

4.0 out of 5 stars Sarah Dessen Strikes Again! 3 July 2008
By Jenny, Wondrous Reads TOP 500 REVIEWER
'The Truth About Forever' is a brilliant teen fiction book, that had me hooked right from page one.

Macy is a seventeen year old girl who is still coming to terms with her Father's death the only way she knows how - by making herself perfect. She has a perfect boyfriend, perfect grade scores, and a perfect appearance. The only thing she is lacking is true friendship and feeling.

Macy unexpectedly meets a new group of people (including Wes, an artist), starts a new job, and soon realises that there can be more to life than perfection. She also realises that grief is dealt with in many ways, and that the only help you need is the truth.

Sarah Dessen's characters are always true to life and believable, and this just makes the story that much better.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has read 'Just Listen' (also by Dessen), or who is a teen fiction reader in general. You won't be disappointed.

The Truth About Forever, by Sarah Dessen, is a masterpiece and worth every second of your life. The only times I would advice one to put this book down is if a) the house is burning down b) you've set something on fire, or c) you're invaded by a herd of Dinosaurs.

Macy Queen, the main character, is spending her summer looking after her genius-boy boyfriend, Jason's job while he's off at Brain Camp. She's bored (not to mention very unhappy) out of her mind sitting at the Help Desk, watching her mother prepare for various cocktail parties to boost sells on her new town house ideas, and silently grieving over her dad's recent death.

But things start changing when Macy joins the Wish Catering Crew, where she meets Delia, Kristy, Bert, Monica, and finally, Wes. Each and every one of her new friends help to show Macy--even if they don't know it--that she IS allowed to give in to her emotions, and that there are no rules to forever, as long as you make it the way you want it to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. 10 Jan 2012
This book is absolutely amazing. It really transports you, it includes you. You feel like you are Macy, you do everything she does, you feel everything she does. I felt a little funny after reading it, as if the book was reality, and I sort of didn't know who I was or what I was doing any more. Every teenage girl should read Sarah Dessen.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book.
It had a wonderful, dreamy feel to it.
The characters are all well written and the storyline is sublime. I am actually not very fond of Sarah Dessens style of writing, but this book just couldn't be any better.
It has so many positive messages woven in the pages.
Just beautiful, a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Sarah Dessen! 17 July 2004
I love this book and Sarah Dessen, her books are fantastic and "The Truth About Forever" is no different. The issues tackled are real and Dessen writes with fresh honesty, nothing is held back from her writing which is why I love the books. "The Truth About Forever" is great because it tackles issue that teenagers go through, and they come from a teenage point of view. When you read this book ,or any of Dessen's books, you really feel like you are the central character, and you feel the emotions they do. As you journey through Macy, the main character's, life you get caught in her world, this book is an emotion rollercoaster. You journey though as Macy copes with her father's death, being apart from her boyfriend then there break up, as she makes new friends and above all, realises who she really is and finally realises she doesn't have to be perfect.
This book is a gem and a perfect read for anyone who loves Sarah Dessen's previous books

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Dessen I've read so far 17 Feb 2009
By H
Macy is cool, calm and collected. She is `fine. Just fine.' But on the inside she is still struggling to come to terms with her dad's sudden death. Her perfect boyfriend has gone to brain camp, leaving her with the prospect of an endless summer, spent studying and working at the library with two girls who hate her. Enter Wish Catering, who serve the food at a party her mum hosts. On a whim, Macy takes them up on a job offer and is suddenly thrown into a chaotic, disorganised world. For Macy, who's become organised as a way of dealing with her dad's death, this is difficult to handle. But she soon makes new friends and begins to learn that she doesn't have to be perfect after all.

From people who like Sarah Dessen, I always hear that they love all her work, but The Truth About Forever is one of their favourites (This Lullaby being the other). It took me a long time to pick it up because of the cover, which I don't really like. Anyway, I eventually decided to give it a go and I'm so glad I did! It's wonderful. The characters are absolutely amazing. I believed in every single one of them and of course, the romance with gorgeous, sexy Wes didn't hurt. Macy's job with Wish is the kind of dream job that you'd love and her co-workers are all ideal. It's extremely believable, especially Macy's recovery.

If you want a contemporary teenage book that includes realistic life today without overdramatizing, or becoming patronising, try one by Sarah Dessen. Yes, they usually include recovery from some problem or other, but that's not the point of them. The point is that they're fun, emotionally engaging, and realistic with amazing characters that you will want to be your friends.
