Product Description

Review

"As the original researcher who first identified and described burnout, Dr. Maslach now digs to the roots of alienation and loss of community in many large organizations." (T. George Harris, editor, Spirituality & Health)

"Full of important lessons for those who experience burnout and those who are in positions to prevent it from occurring...it′s a road map to the design of workplaces that will restore the vitality and the promise of fulfilling work." (Wayne Cascio, professor of management, College of Business and Administration, University of Colorado at Denver)

"The proposed solutions reach well beyond simple–minded, individual stress management to the core challenge of redesigning the work environment." (David S. Sobel, director of patient education and health promotion, Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program)

"A welcome corrective to much of the writing I see on burnout. The authors show convincingly that the causes and solutions?are to be found primarily in the organization, not the individual." (Cary Cherniss, professor of applied psychology, Rutgers University)

"RecommAnded for business collections." (Steven Silkunas, DCO SEPTA/FRONTIER, Library Journal)

Product Description

Today′s workforce is experiencing job burnout in epidemic proportions. Workers at all levels, both white– and blue–collar, feel stressed out, insecure, misunderstood, undervalued, and alienated at their workplace. This original and important book debunks the common myth that when workers suffer job burnout they are solely responsible for their fatigue, anger, and don′t give a damn attitude. The book clearly shows where the accountability often belongs. . . .squarely on the shoulders of the organization.

Format:Hardcover
The Truth About Burnout is an interesting book for the simple reason that Maslach & Lieter point out that corporations cause stress. Most stress management books are keen to list things individuals do to cause themselves grief and never mention the role that their employers play. All the main causes of stress are covered - failure of new technology, obsession with change, less reward for more responsibility, job insecurity, increased overtime demands, lack of control... The list goes on. Most usefully, there are suggestions as to how the situation could be relieved by the corporations.

I strongly recommend that anyone with an interest in corporate stress reads this book. It provides an insight from an often overlooked angle.

A Good Read! 1 Mar 2004
By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter’s groundbreaking book debunks myths about burnout and holds organizations accountable for this epidemic, which has swept the work world. The authors detail how organizations can treat and prevent burnout, and take a critical look at its deep-rooted causes, including lack of engagement and conflict between employees’ values and their jobs. Conversationally and with great impact, the authors support their points and suggestions. We recommend this book to executives, managers and employees. Now go home and get some rest.

A great help 28 Mar 2004
Format:Hardcover
I deal with burnout as an occupational physician. This book has been useful background reading to me. Equally important, I have recommended it to patients and have had some very positive feedback - they have been helped by understanding that the problem is not just theirs.
