5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story...a lifeline when I needed it! 16 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I bought Dare Truth or Promise at a time when I was first beginning to question my own sexuality. I was desperately hoping that it would give me something - anything - that might help me understand my situation and myself a little better. I was not disappointed then and I never have been since. I love this book. It is beautifully written and the two main characters, Willa and Louie are strong, intelligent, loveable young women who are very easy to relate to and sympathise with. This story is more dramatic than other young lesbian novels I have read which also helps to make it a great read. It also has a refreshing reaction by a priest to Louie's questions about the Church and homosexuality which I found particularly moving, even as a non-believer. When their relationship is discovered, the two girls face a lot of difficulties, especially from Louie's family. The pain caused by both their feelings and their separation is portrayed accurately but very sensitively and at times, I felt, as they did that it was almost too much to bear. But Louie and Willa somehow find the strength to overcome their own doubts, the prejudice around them and all the other events that throw themselves in their path. The ending is beautiful and very poignant: Paula Boock has written a wonderful novel and a beautiful love story. Whether you are gay, confused or not, read this book and it will certainly touch your heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read. 17 July 2004
Format:Paperback
Dare Truth or Promise was the first GLBT book i read. I wish i'd had the pleasure of reading it earlier on because it would have helped my confidence before i came out.

Its protagonists are called Louie and Willa, two girls who fall for one another when Willa comes to work at the local fast food restaurant on the same shift as Louie. When Louie's mum finds out about the two of them, all hell breaks lose.

One of my favourite moments is the first night they spend together when neither of them want to sleep in their own beds so they share the floor. All the intimate parts of the book are told really tastefully. It was a really heart-wrenching read towards the end - it's a shame it took such measures before they realised they were strong enough to be together and face the world.

I'd recommend Dare Truth or Promise to anybody, straight or gay, because it's a great book that's less of a story about realising you're gay, and more about learning that love can overcome all the obstacles in its way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding fiction 20 Jan 2004
By unlikely_heroine VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
In the UK, this book (by a New Zealand author) is published as part of a series about female teenagers' lives and has a similar design and cover to the rest of the set. It just goes to show you should never judge a book by its cover (what a cliche! - but true) as this novel stands heads and shoulders above the other books it accompanies - in fact, it belongs to a whole other league.

"Dare Truth or Promise" is a touching, moving, funny, searingly honest and genuinely brilliant book, and also quite a brave one. It tells the story of Willa and Louie, who meet and fall in love. Life isn't so straightforward, of course - and the fact that these two youngsters are both girls causes some problems.

What amazed me when I was reading this book was the quality of the writing. There are little subtleties in the writing, some really wry humour, that you simply do not expect to find in a "teen" novel. And, you care about these characters - you want to know what happens to them and whether their relationship, the heart of the novel, will work out. That's because these characters seem very real, as do their feelings. So too do the difficulties of balancing their emotions with the world around them and how their world reacts to them being together, and, well, being lesbians.

There is one phrase in particular that I took away from this book - I think, if you read it, you'll know the one I mean. It has stayed in my mind, and so too has my impression of this novel as a great read, and a brilliant account of lesbian love that I would recommend to anyone - especially young gay women. "Dare Truth or Promise" is truly outstanding, and it's also, in its combination of subject matter, quality of writing and characterisation, and sheer SPIRIT, truly rare.
