Review

An accomplished and impressive piece of tartan noir --The List

Black renders his nicotine-stained domain in a hardboiled slang that fizzles with vicious verisimilitude --Guardian

Black's visceral prose makes this a superior offering in a crowded market --Big Issue

'This is an excellent police procedural novel and Rob Brennan is a thoroughly engaging and believable protagonist. The book takes a very dark and difficult topic and treats it with sensitivity and complete lack of sensationalism. Yet it's a thrilling, chilling enthralling read' --The Big Beat from Badsville

'Truth Lies Bleeding is a brilliant read. Black has created a compelling character in Brennan but he's particularly good at showing the lives of people on the margins of Edinburgh society, the grimy underbelly of smack heads and low lives. Truth Lies Bleeding is another cracking slice of the dark side of life from Tony Black and proof that he's got plenty of tricks up his sleeve' --Pulp Metal magazine

'Tony Black has proved in his earlier books that he can write up a storm and in this book he also really nails the characterizations that make this impossible to put down' --Crimespree

'Truth Lies Bleeding pins the reader to their chair with deft action, sharp characters and a harrowing plot. Well worth catching'
--Crime Time Preview

'With comparisons to the likes of Irvine Welsh and William McIlvanney echoing in his ears, Tony Black has become a top-class author in his own right. In his fifth novel, Black once again brings Edinburgh to life in a way few can ... it is an apt portrayal of a city honestly reflected by its "Jekyll and Hyde" status'
--3AM Magazine

'Every flaw is stripped of shadow and every bad deed gets punished ... Truth Lies Bleeding is fast, sharp and brilliantly plotted. It's only just turned spring but if I read a better example of the police procedural this year I will be amazed'
--Crimesquad (5 star review)

Scottish noir at its absolute and utter best, Truth Lies Bleeding is a rollercoaster of the personal and professional, dark and light, desperation and determination --Australian Crime Fiction

Book Description

Tony Black moves away from the noir of his Gus Dury novels with this terrific police procedural featuring Detective Inspector Rob Brennan, just back from psychiatric leave and on a mission.

When four teenagers find the dismembered body of teenage runaway Carly Donald in a dumpster on one of Edinburgh's worst housing schemes, Inspector Rob Brennan is put on the case. He's only just back at work, having been off on psychiatric leave, after the murder of his brother. If that wasn't bad enough, it's apparent that the young girl has very recently given birth - and the baby is missing. Add to that more than a few problems at home and at work, and you know that things are going to get a tad difficult. This is an excellent police procedural novel and Rob Brennan is a thoroughly engaging and believable protagonist. He is likeable despite his dark side, and is a genuinely good cop. He has strong instincts and isn't afraid to follow them, and once he's got his teeth into a case he won't give up, no matter what the personal and professional cost may be.

The book takes a very dark and difficult topic and treats it with sensitivity and complete lack of sensationalism. Yet it's a thrilling, chilling enthralling read.I am a huge fan of Tony Black's Gus Dury series, so I was prepared to be grumpy that TRUTH LIES BLEEDING was Gus-less. At the very least, I thought it would take a little while for Inspector Rob Brennan to grow on me. Not so. It was like being snogged by Johnny Depp when you're apprehensively anticipating Shane McGowan.

'Truth Lies Bleeding' launches a new Scottish detective with the appearance of Detective Inspector Rob Brennan of Lothian and Borders Police. He has just returned from psychiatric leave after being traumatised by the still unsolved shooting of his brother. Brennan is thrown back in at the deep end when he has to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a young girl's mutilated body in an Edinburgh alleyway.

As the story unfolds DI Brennan knows the case is in chaos, nothing was fitting together. He knew there was a bigger picture, something that linked up the missing pieces and the author takes you on an enthralling journey as Brennan battles to find the truth.

The prologue gives an immediate taster of the excellent descriptive style of writing and draws you into the story. It shocks yet lures you in to find out more.

I had thought I was familiar with all the writers of Scottish crime fiction but have to admit I hadn't come across Tony Black's work before. I didn't know what I was missing!

Although I believe he is now predominantly resident in Australia, he is bang up to date with descriptions of Edinburgh's congestion and traffic chaos caused by road works for installation of the trams etc. He has truly captured the essence of Edinburgh, the traits and behaviour of individuals and develops his characters well.

It would be a crime not to read this book - I certainly hope we will can look forward to the development of more DI Brennan cases in future.

Giving Gus Dury a day off, Old Tone introduces us to hard boiled beaut of a Scottish Detective, Rob Brennan. Fresh from psyche leave after the shooting of his brother, Brennan is hurled into a case involving the brutal murder of a young girl. Brannan does the best he can to keep a professional head on things but the vicious nature of the crime and his brother not yet cold in his mind, the psychological torment he suffers is wonderfully illustrated. But being an Old school cop in a new school world, Brennan is like a dog with a bone and will not stop at anything until the lid has firmly been placed on this case.

Typical of Tony Black, we have the streets of Edinburgh and Scottish life on the rough side brought to us in vivid and tight sentences. What makes this one different is that it is steeped in what seemed to be accurate police procedure and I got the distinct impression that he had researched long and hard on this one. Probably going as far as to embed himself with a team of coppers for a while, I'd wager.
