What a fantastic first novel. The book is set in the early sixties and the author catches this era superbly. Although it is gritty and is about lives of those who live in and around the underworld, it has a charm that is often missing in this genre. It has a fast moving plot which is deftly interwoven with true events. In addition to this it has characters that I really cared about - including the cat! I hope this is the first of many novels. I can't wait to hear what life has in store for Daisy Lane.

Very rarely, l buy a book, based on peoples reviews, before
having a look at in the book shop, then committing myself.
I did with this, and am l glad l did. It's all set in the
60's, and if you grew up in that era, it will really ring
home. It's a gangster based book, with some really nasty
people in. Though everything fitted in to place, and l
read it in 3 days, which is quick for me! It had me hooked
from page 1, with there being only 7 main characters in
the book, it was an easy read.
If June continues to write books like this, we have another
brilliant author on our hands.
I've just ordered her new book Broken Bodies, on the back
of this book. Cant really say much more can l Daisy?
(lead Character).
As another reviewer said, take it on holiday, and enjoy it.

Cant wait for the new one.

This book is set locally to where I live, although in the early sixties, so it was interesting for me, recognising the locations and landmarks.

Our heroine Daisy Lane is married to Kenny, currently serving time at Her Majesty's Pleasure for robbery, a crime we discover was commited alongside his elder brother Eddie, who escaped arrest and conviction, although he is being watched carefully by a local policeman, a one-time schoolfriend.

Kenny is a sub-plot to the story and we only dip into his character and storyline now and again, with Daisy and her developing relationship with Eddie as the main thread.

Eddie is a villain, although he tries to put himself a step away from his dealings, and does keep his business from Daisy, who runs a cafe in the local town, trying to build up the business as a new start for herself and Kenny when he is released.

Along the way she takes in Susie, a young runaway, and shares her home with the girl, Eddie and a prostitute called Vera.

From her visits to Kenny, she meets Moira, the wife of a London villain, a big time hood, associated with the Krays. Moira is troubled and Daisy offers to help her, ultimately earning herself the respect of Moira's husband Roy.

Daisy gradually falls for the charms of Eddie, who has been in love with her since their first meeting, on the night of Kenny's arrest. They decide to make a fresh start, but fate ensures that Daisy is left alone and with a promise of revenge against the man who has left her with nothing.

We learn about the lives of the characters through the story, although Daisy's own story is fairly brief, perhaps in a sequel we will learn more about her childhood.

Overall a good read, enjoyable in place, heartwrenching in others. Recommended.

I loved this book and saved it to read on my holiday, only problem was it was such a gripping storyline i did nothing else for a day and a bit, and then sulked because i couldn't buy or find broken bones abroad..... I loved Daisy and Vera and if this is the start of things to come from June i am going to be a huge fan. If you like Mandasue Hellar and Martina Cole you will love this even more.

This is one of those books that you just cannot put down. I completely believed in every one of the characters mentioned and found Daisy to be just genius. I would recommend this book to all and i now wait impatiently for the follow up.

Long may Daisy continue, and a huge thank you to June Hampson the author for bringing her to life.

This book was a great read that I couldn't put down for fear of missing something. I found it very eye opening and it gives a real account of life, love and friendship. You can actually picture the people and their lives in your head! Definitely not one to miss. Would highly recommend.
