Review

‘A talent to be reckoned with … A strong story line, muscular prose and a real sense of pace; this is a police procedural for a new age’ Daily Mail

‘A relentlessly exciting debut crime novel.’ Hull Daily Mail

‘An atmospheric and exciting roller coaster ride through an investigation into police corruption … right up there with the best police procedural thrillers of the last few years.
Expect to hear much more of Walters in the future.’ Mark Timlin

Product Description

A timely and topical thriller which looks at the seedy back dealings of criminals and the police.

An addictive read for fans of P.J.Tracey and Peter Robinson.

A terrifically fast-paced novel that has you hooked from the first chapter with a captivating central female lead who you can’t help rooting for. Join Marie Donovan as she races for the truth…

As a covert officer specialising in ‘deep cover’ operations, Marie Donovan works amongst the most dangerous criminals in Manchester. It’s a precarious life that puts Marie on the edge of the law.

When she begins an affair with Jake Morton, an informer due to give evidence against crime lord Jeff Kerridge, Marie knows she’s breaking a cardinal rule.

Yet just as she comes to her senses and puts an end to their relationship, Morton is murdered. Suddenly Marie’s undercover role is exposed and only one thing is certain – she can TRUST NO ONE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, well-written British crime fiction 20 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a tightly constructed, taught thriller with a strong protagonist. Marie Donovan is an undercover officer plunged into a milieu of shifting loyalties and the ever-present threat of extreme violence. As events spiral out of control - some of her own making - she questions her training, her superiors and the motives of the villains (though there are no easy black and white, right and wrong distinctions) - in a bid to stay in the `game'.
The suspense builds nicely and the ending came as a surprise. In many ways it's a small book - in terms of cast of characters and setting - but this only adds to the feeling of claustrophobia. However, Walters spends as much time on the characters - Marie's back story was well done, full of emotional resonance - as on the plot. Okay, some of the baddies might verge on caricatures, but then aren't they in real life?
This is compelling, well-written British crime fiction. If Walters writes another book with Marie Donovan as a protagonist, I'd buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic crime read! 26 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I hadn't heard of Alex Walters until I bought this on a whim and I'm so glad I did! Walters has written a great crime read that delves into Manchester's murky criminal underworld. It was brilliant, totally compelling and kept me guessing right up until the end. The central character Marie Donovan is fab - a strong woman with plenty of tenacity. Highly recommended!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not that good either
This book didn't really go anywhere. For all it's plot twists and the often repeated "Trust No-one" I never really believed in the central characters. Read more
