Review

"Sharply captures the menace of suddenly finding the world may not be at all as you've thought it." HELEN DUMORE --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

A very contemporary love story, as disturbing as it is absorbing, from a vibrant new voice in women’s fiction.

When Chloe meets fellow social worker Dan she is instantly and powerfully attracted to him. She is divorced, he is still married, but they begin an affair that quickly becomes intense – both sexually and emotionally. Chloe’s children accept Dan without hesitation and when Dan leaves his wife, Helena, and moves into a bachelor flat it seems only a matter of time before a new family unit is formed. But, with brutal suddenness, their lives fall apart, when Dan is arrested on suspicion that he has abused a child in his care.

Vividly charting the eroticism of the start of an affair, its slow, painful collapse under the most intense emotional pressure possible, and two people’s struggle to find new ground between them when their sense of themselves has been fractured by events beyond their control, Margaret Leroy reveals herself as an extraordinary new voice in fiction. Writing with passion, assurance and psychological astuteness and a real ability to convey complex and powerful sexual feeling, this is a book which heralds the start of a glittering career.

3.0 out of 5 stars keeps you pasted to the pages, 23 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Trust (Paperback)
This is a good example of how a book can take you in and keep you trapped. There are so few "page turners" around these days, a book where the author has really understood what it means to tell a good yarn. The writing is not complex, and does not pretend to be "literary", but it flows and takes you to all the places you need to go. If there is criticism, it would be about the descriptive passages of mundane things that did not seem to have much to do with the story. Perhaps these were added at the last minute to get the word count up? Another little fault is a classic writing affliction. How can editors let authors keep repeating their favourite words. The word solicitous, in its various forms, became irritating... so did the concept "he was a part of me." These are small quibbles though. It was a general thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and non-judgemental, 28 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Trust (Paperback)
Having met the author (a very nice woman), I picked up the book just to see what it was like, and was pleasantly surprised to find it moving, true to life and beautifully written. And yes, I have had an experience something like the heroine's, so I know that it can happen.

I have two small criticisms. Firstly, the sex scenes were a little OTT in my opinion. Though it's important to detail the sexually-charged relationship between Dan and Chloe, I kind of doubt that many readers could relate to some aspects of their lovemaking. I also felt that the photograph episode was unconvincing. I have two daughters myself, and what Chloe eventually does is what I would have done myself as soon as the existence of the photograph was revealed. She could have saved everyone a lot of time and trouble - but then there would have been no mystery, I suppose

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Surprise, 7 Nov 2000
This review is from: Trust (Paperback)
I picked up this book at the local library because the story sounded interesting. The boring cover didn't do this amazing novel any justice. What a great read! I woke up at 3am and finished it because I just had to know if it had a happy ending.

I can't wait for this author to write another.

Buy this book, it's worth every cent.
