Truly Tasty review of a new recipe book.

Truly Tasty: Over 100 Special Recipes Created by Irelands Top Chefs for Adults Living with Kidney Disease [Illustrated] [Hardcover]

Firstly, its a hefty volume, over 2 kgs so not for the frailer of patients, although good if you wish to `throw the book' tho I don't recommend that! Possibly good for exercise?

The introduction for this book states that it's aimed at Irish adults (18 or over) with renal failure. I'm sure however they don't mind others using the recipes, if your not Irish.

The chapters are sorted by Chef, but with a recipe index at the rear.
An introduction for each chef starts each chapter.

The first part of the book is given to explaining how the book works, measurments, allowances for food, Protien, Potassium, Salt, Fat, Low fat dishes are tagged with LF.

Also included are a second `menu' with Starters, Mains, and Desserts indexed by portion allowance and chef/page number.

The end of the book also contains a minimal section on growing your own herbs.

Flicking through the pages you see luscious dishes, some down to earth, shortbread, quiche, strudle, and other more 'cheffy', but probably just as tasty.

You may think Not Another hefty renal cookbook, but with recipes like Berry Ice cream, Carrot Cake, and a good mixture of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes, this colourful volume is worth having a look at.

As the book states, all patients have different dietary needs. DO consult a dietician before altering your diet. Portion allowances should also be agreed with a dietician.

I recommend this book as a first buy, or as an addition to existing renal cookbooks on the market.

I like this book very much as it gives lots of interesting recipes so that I can make nice dishes for the family and still cater for my husband who has kidney disease.
Some of the recipes are for special occasions but there are plenty ideas for everyday menus too. If the patient is on a weight controlled diet too, you must be careful of the recipes with high calorie content.
The recipes are arranged by chef's submissions rather than having chapters devoted to particular parts of a menu.

I bought this book when my husband was diagnosed with kidney failure in the hope that it would provide us with some inspirational recipes that were going to be OK in terms of kidney disease. There was little information that was useful - it just didn't give enough detail about levels of Potassium etc., I actually returned this item and received a full refund.

Our renal dietitian is quite happy with this. He would have liked a potassium/phosphate/salt breakdown on each recipe, but accepts that these are not "everyday" meals. My husband knows he will get these meals only when I am not on late shift and have time to shop and prepare. Who knows? One day he might even get out the apron and surprise me ..........?

There are some lovely recipes in here, and it's wonderful to be unhooked from notions of a very limited renal diet but I would have liked a few more ideas for everyday eating. However it's brilliant to have meal ideas for when we have friends over, even if my other half might not have the allowances to eat a full portion of everything on offer!

my sister was diagnosed with kidney disease earlier in the year and was still awaiting her dietician appointment, she was stressing over what to eat and she said this book was fantastic and kept her afloat until she saw a professional.

Bought for my father. He is not easy to please and found this very useful - Really cannot say more (or better) than that. Recommended if this fits your dietary requirements.

I got this book as I was hosting a dinner party for a friend with Kidney disease, having trawled the internet for recipes that were tasty and easy to make there wasn't much out there. This book has recipes anyone would enjoy, truly tasty and easy to do. Looked stylish and meant that I could produce a meal everyone enjoyed.
