A hefty volume of Renal Deliciousness
on 24 June 2010
Truly Tasty review of a new recipe book.
Truly Tasty: Over 100 Special Recipes Created by Irelands Top Chefs for Adults Living with Kidney Disease [Illustrated] [Hardcover]
Firstly, its a hefty volume, over 2 kgs so not for the frailer of patients, although good if you wish to `throw the book' tho I don't recommend that! Possibly good for exercise?
The introduction for this book states that it's aimed at Irish adults (18 or over) with renal failure. I'm sure however they don't mind others using the recipes, if your not Irish.
The chapters are sorted by Chef, but with a recipe index at the rear.
An introduction for each chef starts each chapter.
The first part of the book is given to explaining how the book works, measurments, allowances for food, Protien, Potassium, Salt, Fat, Low fat dishes are tagged with LF.
Also included are a second `menu' with Starters, Mains, and Desserts indexed by portion allowance and chef/page number.
The end of the book also contains a minimal section on growing your own herbs.
Flicking through the pages you see luscious dishes, some down to earth, shortbread, quiche, strudle, and other more 'cheffy', but probably just as tasty.
You may think Not Another hefty renal cookbook, but with recipes like Berry Ice cream, Carrot Cake, and a good mixture of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes, this colourful volume is worth having a look at.
As the book states, all patients have different dietary needs. DO consult a dietician before altering your diet. Portion allowances should also be agreed with a dietician.
I recommend this book as a first buy, or as an addition to existing renal cookbooks on the market.
