About the Actor
Lofty joined the Parachute Regiment in 1958. He applied for service with the Special Air Service Regiment in 1959 and set a record as the youngest person ever to pass selection at the age of 18. He served with 22 SAS for 26 years and saw active service worldwide, in every theatre of operations and special operations required of the British Army between 1959 and 1985. Amongst other things, Lofty was Sergeant Major, B Squadron 22 SAS, Sergeant Major 22 SAS Training Wing, Head of Operational Research 22 SAS, he set up the SP Team (Counter Hi-Jack) and set up the SAS Counter-Terrorist Team as well as training the first members of the US Green Berets who then returned to the USA to form the famous Delta Force (US Special Forces). Lofty also ran the famed SAS Selection Course, deciding who was fit to join the Regiment. In addition, Lofty ran the Survival Training School for 22 SAS at Hereford, specialising in all aspects of survival training (land, sea, jungle, desert, arctic, wilderness wherever a special forces soldier or civilian might find themselves). After retiring from 22 Special Air Service Regiment, Lofty set up the Survival School at Hereford and has since trained survival instructors and consultants, expedition members, overseas survival training specialists, military and civilian from across the globe. I bought this DVD for my wife who's been in to all things outdoors since a child. She has all of Lofty Wiseman's books along with the more recent Ray Mears collection so when I stumbled onto this release I knew she would like it.
We haven't taken advantage of any of the navigation features of this DVD yet, only watching it through from start to finish. However, there's so much in it I'm sure we'll be going back to bits of it having tried a few bits and pieces this morning in the garden.
The presentation style and quality is excellent. I sit through many shows of this genre and rarely pay as much attention as I managed throughout this disk. Lofty's experience and personality really kept my interest as you get the feeling that when he's sharing his knowledge, that it's based on his own life's experiences. Another aspect of this presentation which I enjoyed was it's ability to make sense of all of the skills demonstrated. It gave us all an easy way to organise ourselves if faced with an emergency situation. I've no doubt that many people know how to light fires or make shelters but I for one wouldn't have known what to do first or why.
I'll be getting another copy for my father for Christmas as it offers good value for money and I know he'll love it. He's been watching Ray Mears and Bear Grylls on TV for a while and according to my wife at least, Lofty Wiseman blows them out of the water.

john wiseman is great, i have all his books and I truly admire the invaluable skills he teaches, they should be taught in schools.
BUT,
this DVD is a let-down, I cannot see how they come up with the price, DVDs are very cheaply made, and the information it gives could have been much more detailed. for example, it only skims the surface of the amount of edible and useful plants and how to use them, (and when they do you find yourself rewinding to to try to hear what they called it) to make a poultice for example, and totally ignored the many uses of trees, there sap ect. they show you how to make one large shelter, which would be totally impractical unless you happen to have four people with you, a couple of machetes,a survival tin, tough gloves and some mess tins, and had all day, it took three people 3hrs to collect the fern alone, so that means it would take one person 9, yes 9hrs.(and then they go on to explain how important it is in a survival situation to conserve energy! eh. it would have been more informative if each person were given different shelters to construct so that you had an idea of which shelter for which situation.
And only one type of fire, I would have liked it if they would have shown how to make fire without a flint, or a cooking fire for example, or cooked at least one meal, or using sand, charcoal, and moss to filter muddy water but not explaining how they acquired sand in the middle of a wood, or what else you could use. I could go on. the fact that it contradicts loftys survival guide on several points is surprising.
And as for the "interactive" part,(which they have in all DVDs and call it "chapter select" people!!) that's there to make you seem there is more to the DVD than there is.the "extras" part for example is the part they cut out of lofty explaining other things you will find in your Trueways survival tin, and the other "extra" is mixing sand with fuel, putting it in a can to make a hobo stove, THATS IT!.
basically it seemed more like a long advert for Trueways and If I were you I would give this a pass, save your money, watch the survival techniques on U-tube, study his books and practice the techniques. but don't take my word for it, some internet forums call this DVD a rip-off, I'm sorry to say they are not far wrong.

I feel that this video is not worth the asking price. It is more like a taster of what one might expect on a Trueways survival course. There was not a lot of explanation of the skills covered. I have learned more from watching YouTube and would suggest to anybody interested in survival that they try out some of the tutorials.Overall, a bit disappointing!
