Product Description

CD Description

14 rare and unreleased 60s & 70s Soul, Funk, Disco and Party-Rap cuts from the True Soul vaults. 56 page full-color booklet contains never-before-seen photos and candid interviews Bonus DVD with excerpts from the True Soul Revue TV show 60s and 70s Soul, Funk, Disco, Party-Rap and Boogie from the legendary Arkansas label. Compiled by legendary crate-digger Egon, responsible for hit compilations The Funky 16 Corners, Cold Heat, and Forge Your own Chains. Now-Again Records, in association with label-owner Lee Anthony, is proud to present the release of True Soul: Deep Sounds from the Left of Stax, a collection of rare and unreleased funk and soul music from the fabled Arkansas indie. Over twelve years in the making, this seeks to establish True Soul s rightful place within America s funk and soul pantheon. As much as this CD/DVD set is about the adventurous, always-funky and oh-so-rare recordings that True Soul made possible, it is also about Anthony, the man. A true, American up-from-the-bootstraps story, Anthony s is one in which his frontiersman s entrepreneurial spirit and vision remains undeterred as he sets up black-owned businesses in a post-Jim Crow South and succeeds in capturing recordings from the high water mark of America s funk and soul movement. Anthony s story intertwines with the renowned Sam Philips an early mentor and patron and Memphis s Al Bell and Willie Mitchell with whom Anthony collaborated as he tried to cultivate Little Rock s funk and soul in the shadow of Stax and Hi Records. This anthology will make influence amongst the history of southern funk and soul is transparent, as his story of how he helped turn a stranded road band into the Gap Band. This comprehensive True Soul Records anthology presented in a 56-page, full color hardbound book chock full of photos, ephemera and extensive liner notes - not only carries the rare distributed funk and soul 45s that led the likes of renowned collectors DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist to Lee Anthony s door in search of Anthony s fabled treasure chest , but also includes previously unreleased boogie, disco and party rap recorded in True Soul s early-80 s twilight. Accompanying legendary cuts such as Slipping Around and Doing my Own Thing is a DVD containing excerpts from The True Soul Revue television program, that captured live performances from the True Soul All Stars in 1973.

In the liner notes there is a picture of Lee Anthony, the True Soul label
owner, standing next to his "treasure chest", containing hundreds of
seven-inches, and that is exactly what has been picked from it, treasures
in the shape of fat funky nuggets.

It's almost pointless to choose highlites, because there is not much to
omit. Thomas East gets the main attention with four songs. Deservedly so,
as three of them are great ones, but with the exception of 3-4 songs, the
rest is just as good as East.
The James Brown influence is discernible, but the musicians on True Soul
still had a flavor of their own, and the rhythm and horn sections really
knew how to lay down a mean, mean groove. Fan-Foonkin-Tastic!!!

Ren Smith's "Smog" is the funniest joint on it, written after a trip to
Los Angeles; "SMOOOOG...Makes Me Feel Like A Dirty Dog". Heh heh heh!
"Psychedelic Hot Pants" is another find. It sounds like a twisted James
Bond theme, with a highly charged groove and a killer horn section.
Other OUTSTANDING tracks from John Craig, Classic Funk, Albert Smith and
The Right Track makes this a no brainer, all gainer.

Now-Again and Eothen Alapatt have done a raw, raw number with "True Soul".
It's equal to the phattest funk and afrobeat compilations around, such as
"African Scream Contest", "New Orleans Funk", "Ghana Soundz" and "King Funk".
The whole package is very impressive; exeptional music, great sound quality,
a bonus DVD, and extensive, well written liner notes with lots of interviews
and background stories.

Downloads and music libraries my ass! Nothing compares to the real thing
when it's done so thorough as this.
A sensational release. Reissue of the year by a stones throw!

JUST ONE STAR,I DARE SAY ZERO STRS,,, FOR the lousy package they made for this two FANTASTIC VOLUMES,,,THIS music ought to be treated with PROPER ACCURACY,,I mean that's real stuff,,the one you collect,,,
both the cd and Dvd have been stucked in a hard cardboard bookcase-like without an extra slip sleeve to prevent the cd from damage,,it's hard to get them out and once yuo get there you realise the cd's are already almost ruined and dirty from the mispackaging someone thought of doing,,maybe to retrench expenses,,to cut corners in the production,,the items are made in China??!!
I'M a keep the stuff just for the love of it,,,,another wiered thing I just can't undertstand why you made the liners note inside the booklet almost similar,, they changed some pictures here n' there it seems like they went wrong in crafting and collecting the pages....that's too bad..
lastly the MUSIC IS REAL FUNKY AND SOUL,,,PLEASE DON'T KEEP CUTTING CORNERS FOR THIS VALUABLE FUNK,,,MUSIC LIKE THIS WILL NEVER BE MADE AGAIN UNFORTUNATLEY.

SLEEYO FORM THA BOTTOM OF MY HEART,PEACE Y'ALL. JUST KEEPIN' FUNK ALIVE.

I did not recieve the audio cd with the package, only the DVD which does not even work in most players. I would like to review the music, but first I have to figure out a way to listen to it.
