This book is my horsemanship bible. A gentle, thinking way to work with horses. It is true that the style of writing is unusual as it reflects the way that Bill Dorrance spoke. It took me a long time to understand some of what he was saying but I return to this book when I have a problem with riding and the information is there. If you have read Mark Rashid, Buck Brannaman etc., this book would probably interest you. The exercises seem unusual and slow to people who have not learnt that you can teach a horse by rewarding it by release of pressure, but they work. I have become a better horseman because of this book and my horses are becoming relaxed yet responsive.

This book should not be read by an impatient person; but then, an impatient person should not be handling horses - unless they want to learn from them......

The book was written as it was spoken by Tom Dorrance, and you join in the conversation. I'm a skim-reader but this book slowed me down, sometimes re-reading sentences or paragraphs two or three times, and I expect I'll come back. It's not a 'fix-it-quick' book, going much deeper than that.

I've read many books on horse training, but I wish I'd read this one first. Tom Dorrance slows your human actions to feel and therefore understand your horse's thoughts and subsequent actions. He tells you how to develop deep feelings between humans and horses. If you think you already have this with your horse, you'll discover you've glossed over and missed a lot.

This is a fascinating book for anyone who has become involved in the natural/intelligent horsemanship movement. Whether you are keen on Monty Roberts, Parelli, Clinton Anderson, Mark Rashid or any of the many modern teachers then this book is from one of the guys who started it all off. The Dorrance brothers took French Classical riding and adapted it to Western, and in doing built the foundation for a method of training which is focussed on getting a willing partnership between rider and horse without the use of force.

The book reads as if Bill Dorrance is speaking (at 90+), so the style is rather "Folksy" and some of the terminology may not match more modern usage. However if you read it carefully it is packed with gems of wisdom from a great horseman. Whether you ride Western or English this is an excellent addition to library and well worth a careful read. As a "how to" book it is probably better read as background to one of the more modern trainers, but it will help you understand the underlying theory.
