Product Description

Here are two of England's most stirring women singers in solo, duet and trio performances (joined by Lal's daughter, Maria), varying the vision of The Watersons on this 1977 recording by only using female voices giving a different ambience and depth and capturing the sisters' empathy in full flight.

I am a great admirer of the Watersons, of Lal Waterson and Norma Waterson, so perhaps I was expecting too much from this record which was released on Topic in 1977, and probably accurately reflects Topic's somewhat minimalist approach of the time i.e limited simple musical accompaniment, and a short playing time. This reissue includes 2 further bonus tracks and is certainly worth buying if available at a reasonable price, but I wouldn't put it in as high a class as much of their other work

For a unique album of Traditional English Folk songs you cannot go wrong with this offering. Lal and Norma Waterson from the Watersons created this album in 1977 and it is an excellent recording.
The original album contains a wealth of Traditional songs. There were twelve tracks originally but this release has been padded out with the inclusion of a track from the Watersons album a Yorkshire Garland from 1966 and another track recorded in the 1980s.
The album has a wonderful vocal style and there is the familiar sound of a Watersons album. The album also contains guest musicians, Jim Elden on flute and Whistle, Peta Webb on fiddle, Rod Stradling on melodeon and Tony Engle on anglo concertina.
There is a rich sound and tone and the album should appeal to anyone who likes recordings from the Watersons.

For Those British Folk at Heart! 13 Oct. 2006
By Sylviastel - Published on Amazon.com

The music of two sisters, Lal and Norma Waterson, on this compact disc is a great collection of their folk music from another age. Norma still has not lost her touch with the down home country style music here. These sisters are known in Britain for their contributions to folk music there. Sadly, Lal is no longer with us but Norma is. This music is the kind that reminds you of American folk. There is not much difference in the sound. You swear that they could have played the heart of America as they play the heart of England in Yorkshire country. I will give it a four because they deserve it for the music here. It's not for everybody neither but I enjoy listening to the Waterson sisters as I do anybody else. They sing with heart and soul and music.
