True Grit is a powerful story of vengeance and valour set in an unforgiving and unpredictable frontier where justice is simple and mercy is rare. Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), is determined to avenge her father's blood by capturing Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), the man who shot and killed him for two pieces of gold.
Just fourteen, she enlists the help of Rooster Cogburn Academy Award® Winner Jeff Bridges), a one-eyed, trigger-happy U.S. Marshall with an affinity for drinking and hardened Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Academy Award® Winner Matt Damon) to track the fleeing Chaney. Despite their differences, their ruthless determination leads them on a perilous adventure that can only have one outcome: retribution.

Definitely the best film I've seen this year. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon both play outstanding roles, with without doubt the star performance is by Hailee Steinfeld.
If, like me, you have fond memories of the original film with John Wayne and Kim Darby, and are worried that it might be just a pale re-make - don't be. It's a brilliantly scripted, directed and shot film that stands up in its own right.
It deserves a place on anyone's one-to-watch list.

It's a rare occurrence when I sit through a film so utterly engrossed that I have no criticisms of it at all. But True Grit managed that feat. Which makes the plethora of negative reviews all the harder to understand.
Beautifully and atmospherically shot (with a slight fairy tale quality), it also boasts engaging performances from Jeff Bridges, a hard to recognise Matt Damon and especially the young Hailee Steinfeld who is totally captivating. Most of the film's charm is due to her precocious self-confidence.
I've not seen the original, so can't compare, but I urge you to ignore the poor reviews here, see the film and make up your own mind.
And all this from someone who doesn't usually like the Coen Brothers!

True Grit is a fantastic poetic film from the Coen Brothers. Set in the old west it follows a fourteen year old girl Mattie (Hailee Steinfield) whose father has been killed in cold blood by outlaw Chaney (Josh Brolin). Mattie seeks retribution and tracks down hard-drinking, trigger happy Deputy U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges)a man with 'True Grit'to find Chaney and kill him. Along the way they are joined by Texas Ranger LaBouef (Matt Damon)who has been pursuing Chaney for other crimes.
The films plot is told and played out in a unhurried manner and character development is given priority over action and tempo which is a refreshing change to most films.
Jeff Bridges is brilliant in his role as Cogburn, but for me the star of the film is Hailee Steinfield who steals the film.
I would highly recommend this film and if you have any doubts about it being another western film or being a remake of the awful John Wayne movie then don't let those things put you off.

Is it just me, or can you not tell what he's saying?
I bought this following favourable reviews. It might be a good film, but my wife and I gave up with it because we just couldn't understand what Jeff Bridges was saying.
