Product Description

Review

"A meditation on (among other things) art, trust, loyalty, politics and popular culture. With utter simplicity, and with unexpectedly intense storytelling, it achieves all that and more." --Janet Maslin

Product Description

Hartley discusses the development and collapse of the American indie film culture of the '90s and reflects upon his experiences as an independent creative artist trying to exist within the commercial film culture business. Augmented by numerous full-color photographs and a complete illustrated filmography, True Fiction Pictures & Possible Films is an important discussion of the past and future of the independent film industry and will be a valuable addition to the shelves of Hartley fans, film students, and anyone interested in independent film.

Short But Sweet 15 Oct 2008
By A. Ross - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've never been a huge Hal Hartley fan, but I've always found his work interesting and worth seeing. This attractive little book collects eight interviews the author conducted with Hartley from 1999-2004. These are presented in classic Q&A format, and cover his career as a filmmaker and stage director. Interspersed with the interviews are tons of stills from his work and of Hartley at work, with a 20 page filmography wrapping things up. What sets this apart from the standard film interview book is the top-notch design and production. Still, it's hard to imagine anyone not already a Hartley fan being that interested in it.
