Wistful, Ethereal, Magical reworking of a CLASSIC, 15 Mar 2011
This review is from: True Faith (Audio CD)
My first listen of this track came as a surprise. Whilst George Michael has cultivated a reputation for an eclectic demonstration of musical styles, this was beyond my expectation.
Firstly the song "True Faith" is a classic by New Order and as such a particularly difficult job to cover well!
Choosing an entirely different arrangement was a brave move, though ultimately necessary to stand as anything but an inferior copy.
In this respect George Michael has succeeded on multiple levels.
1. Achieving an entirely different track from the original.
2. Originally arranged as an orchestral ballad, whilst utilising a Vocoder effect to put a heavy electronic edge to the vocal.
3. The ethereal, dreamy, wistful sound the Vocoder effect gives the vocal, is highly appropriate given the content of the vocal itself. Not to mention Georges own history and motivation for choosing this track. Sounding very much like an altered state, under the influence of some substance, or other; it is easy to imagine the head swimming as the song continues.
In addition to the musical merit of the track itself, it is the Official Comic Relief song and all proceeds will go to the charity.
If you find it too different at first listen, give it a couple more plays, it WILL grow on you!
A classic song in the making. For a great cause!

Hard to give it any stars really. But please do buy it because it's for comic relief, but do yourself a favour and don't listen to it. Just put the original on. What was he thinking?

What a shame !, 20 Mar 2011

Having been a life long fan of george i was looking forward to this ,
But what we get is a slow drone of a song with georges voice treated through a spin dryer of electronic wizardry
Which equals a load of rubbish really ,
