Product Description

NME, April 09, 2005

Peppered with behind-the-scenes stories to make any New Order fan get all hot under the collar. Fascinatingly comprehensive.

Book Description

The first ever book to concentrate on the music of New Order, one of the key rock groups of the 1980s.

Formed from the ashes of Joy Division after their ill fated singer Ian Curtis hung himself, few could have predicted that New Order would become one of the seminal groups of the 80s.

True Faith looks in detail at the musical evolution of New Order from the early days of Joy Division, through their classic songs such as "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Atmosphere" and on to the classic New Order singles and albums.
From the bestselling 12 inch single "Blue Monday" to later hits like "Bizarre Love Triangle" [featured in the Trainspotting movie] and their spectacular world cup song "World In Motion" the band have continued making innovative, critically revered records that have also enjoyed massive commercial success including recent hit "Crystal".

Thompson's last book was a very handy guide to the vast and confusing discography of those other Manc legends, The Fall. Despite both bands having recordings dating back 28 years New Order/Joy Division are nowhere near as prolific, nor anthologised. Thompson gets around this by detailing solo careers, the odd bootleg, TV appearances and radio sessions. Its peppered with a fair amount of new interview material and anecdotes making it readable enough but hardly an essential buy for anyone but serious fans. Maddeningly short on detail in some cases, overlong in others (I wanted to know more about oddities like their Hacienda Christmas single....less about the umpteenth remix of True Faith). The writer also seems to be on a crusade to promote the rather less critically acclaimed solo careers. New Orders classic 'Technique' is brushed off in a couple of paragraph as being somewhat "...of its time", whereas Electronic and The Other Two are hailed as great lost classics...and he's so in awe of Peter Hooks solo stuff you wonder if he's not actually a very good mate of Hooky's?

So, Beyond the writers opinions there isn't much info here you can't get for free online, shame really it would have been nice to have a bit more research about the recording sessions, unreleased tracks and a more colourful critique of the music. Get the feeling it was rush released to coincide with the release of 'Waiting for the Siren's Call' (the designer of the jacket clearly had a very tight deadline to meet!) so maybe there is a better 2nd edition of this book to come.

Factually incorrect in a whole host of places, this ain't no great read, especially when you consider what else is already available, if a bit hard to find these days.
