This Much Is True!,
By DJ Control (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: True + DVD (Audio CD)
Album number three in the Spandau catalogue gets the special edition treatment.Thankfully, unlike some of the recent EMI remasters, they have managed to get it right on this reissue.Much of the work was already done by using the 2003 remaster released on True: 20th Anniversary Enhanced Edition and Super Audio CD True. The albums producer,Tony Swain, supervised the 2003 digital remaster and he did a stellar job.In my opinion the SACD,which sounds superb,is the definitive edition.Unfortunately it's no longer available and is commanding obscene prices from third party sellers.I was lucky enough to pick up a copy from Amazon. If you can find one that's not too expensive and have the relevant hardware(an SACD player or some PS3 models),you will not hear a better master of this album. But don't worry, the first cd in this Special edition is the next best thing.Cd number two gathers together all the relevant single edits/extended versions released, some of which appear on cd for the first time, and the 2002 Gary Kemp remix of True, previously only available on the 3 disc anthology Reformation.Plus four live tracks, previously unreleased, recorded at Sadler's Well London on the 1st of May 1983 during the "Over Britain" tour. This same live concert, minus the four aforementioned tracks on cd two,is included on disc three,a dvd.Herein lies the real treat for Spandau fans.A 10 track video performance, nicely filmed and well restored with half decent sound considering it was recorded in 1983.Very nice! The dvd also contains five Top Of The Pops appearances, three songs performed on the Old Grey Whistle Test in April 1983 and a short period documentary on the making of the album. It's not my favourite Spandau album, that's "Parade" which has never sounded good on cd and unfortunately the reissue of that album Parade: Special Edition/Remastered is appalling. How EMI can get one reissue spot on and completely botch another is baffling to say the least. All in all True is a pretty good special edition, for the price. The only thing lacking is in the package itself. The insert that's included, only eight pages of it,has a couple of promo shots, some sparse info on disc contents and little else.Song lyrics and recollections of the band members would've been nice. It's missing the extra stuff we have come to expect from deluxe/special editions.A minor niggle I know, but that added detail would have made this a five star edition. The music???...That's Gold !

Another 25?,
This review is from: True + DVD (Audio CD)
Great set, but as they "found" 4 tracks from Saddlers Wells in 83 makes me think they had to record the entire concert, so why not give us the full show on the dvd as opposed to the edited vhs version? Also why not release the full concert on the REFORMATION set?Or even better yet (insert record group here) screw us over like EMI (Pistols spring to mind anyone?) with the Duran Duran deluxe sets where every box comes with a dvd yet RIO is only a 2cd set, so get out & buy the Hammersmith 82 dvd/cd as well (yes I did). Still a great album for the ever changing Ballet & yes Tony did punch the "wanker" from OASIS in the nose! Now as to the a-ha 25 dvd which is missing 15 "videos" at last count think Pistols again!!!!!
