Spandau Ballet - Once More

Biography

To Cut A Long Story Short

The first time that most Londoners heard the words Spandau Ballet was on the London Weekend Television arts programme Twentieth Century Box, in May 1980. Presented by Danny Baker, Twentieth Century Box was the place you went to for your youth culture fix.

And Baker’s programme was devoted to a new cult, The Cult With No Name, a bunch of soul boys and ... Read more in Amazon's Spandau Ballet Store

True by Spandau fronted by Tony Hadley has to be one of the best albums not only of the band but of the whole early 80's. As soon as you listen to the haunting tracks from 'Gold' to 'True' it takes you sweeping back to 1983. Spandau seemed to encapsulate the New Romantic era along with 'Duran Duran' and make it there own. All the songs on this now classic album are fantastic and sound as good today as they did then. What with Tony's melo vocals to Gary Kemps song writing talents the band couldn't loose !. This is a must buy all the better for the re-mix of 'GOLD' and the home movie footage for the P.C as a VCD. The album gives a warm glow to day's gone that will never be so better captured by any band.

The review refers to the 2cd/dvd Special Edition released in 2010.

Album number three in the Spandau catalogue gets the special edition treatment. Thankfully, unlike some of the recent EMI remasters, they have managed to get it right on this reissue. Much of the work was already done by using the 2003 remaster released on True: 20th Anniversary Enhanced Edition and Super Audio CD True. The albums producer,Tony Swain supervised this 2003 digital remaster and he did a stellar job. In my opinion the SACD,which sounds superb,is the definitive edition. Unfortunately it's no longer available and is commanding obscene prices from third party sellers. I was lucky enough to pick up a copy from Amazon. If you can find one that's not too expensive and have the relevant hardware (an SACD/Bluray player or some PS3 models) you will not hear a better master of this album. But don't worry, the first cd in this Special edition is the next best thing.

Cd number two gathers together all the relevant single edits/extended versions released, some of which appear on cd for the first time, and the 2002 Gary Kemp remix of True, previously only available on the 3 disc anthology Reformation. Plus four previously unreleased live tracks recorded at Sadler's Well London on the 1st of May 1983 during the "Over Britain" tour.

This same live concert, minus the four aforementioned tracks on cd two,is included on disc three,a dvd. Herein lies the real treat for Spandau fans.

True (1983) is the most successful studio album by Spandau Ballet. It reached #1 on the album chart and went to #19 on the US billboard chart. In Europe the album went to #1 in the Netherlands, #8 in Germany, and #13 in Sweden. It was also #1 in New Zealand. It has since gone platinum and is one of the most well-known and successful albums of the decade.

The album spawned the singles Lifeline (#7), True (#1), Gold (#2), and Communication (#12); Pleasure was also a limited release in Europe. In the US, the singles that charted were True (#4), Gold (#27), and Communication (#59). 1983 was the year that Spandau broke into America. It was also the year they changed their musical style and image.

In 1979, when Spandau formed, they were part of the new romantic movement. They wore kilts and frequented London clubs with other similar artists. These new romantics were also known as the Blitz Kids, after the trendy London nightclub where you would also be apt to run into the likes of Boy George, Duran Duran, Modern Romance, Steve Strange and, of course, Spandau.

They released their first album, Journeys to Glory (1981), which was electronic synth-pop; this was followed by the synth-pop and funk driven experimental album, Diamond (1982). In 1983, Spandau threw out the kilts in favour of suave suits, filmed their music videos in exotic locations around the world, and changed their music style to mainstream jazz, soul, and R&B infused pop.

Out of this change came True.

Excellent edition, but without "Live and let live", the "Lifeline" UK B-side. All the versions on the 7" and 12" mixes are in, so I can re-edit my favorite song "Lifeline". I would like to find more information about the songs and the recording process of the album, its history, some curiosity or anecdote. But in the end, that's fine too.

This is a brilliant edition from my favorite band of all time! The stunning live performance tracks are worth it alone but the DVD puts it over the top with the 1983 concert at Sadler's Wells, videos from Top of the Pops, etc AND the home movies of the making of "True." This special edition is – excuse the pun – true gold!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Steve Barham on 9 Aug. 2010
Format: Audio CD
I never realised in those hedonistic days how much I enjoyed Spandau Ballet until I got to playing them again in the late 90,s. Fed up with all the "modern trash" I looked back for a smoother sound, went through my vinyl and found I had, True, Parade and a cassette of Through the Barricades!!. Since then I have updated all albums, from Journeys to glory though to " Heart like a sky" and absolutely love them all. In my view an underrated band. Heart like a sky has some fantastic tracks that have been lost due to the bands acrimonious split in 1989. The reworking of True is fantastic. The DVD from Sadlers Wells is superb, and the band sound the same live as they do on the tracks, a true testimony to the playing skills of the guys. Steve Norman is superb, Tony has a superb voice and knocks spots of most artists from this era and still does today. Excellent sound quality and a must buy. Any "true" Spandau fan will love it, and anybody prepared to give this a try for the first time will be bowled over.
