Product Description

A staunch adherent of old-style honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dale Watson has positioned himself as a tattooed, stubbornly independent outsider only interested in recording authentic country music. In 1998, Watson issued his debut volume of Truckin' Sessions. It was a stunning collection of 14 self-penned tunes written in the tradition of Red Simpson, Dave Dudley, Merle Haggard, and Red Sovine. Since that time, Watson released a second volume of Truckin songs in 2009. This collection brings both CDs together with 14 NEW tracks celebrating one of Dale Watsons most venerable subjects, truckers and trucking with Truckin Sessions Trilogy!

Great set of top truckin' songs. How does he do it? A real country music star. The third CD - all new songs - would have been worth the money on its own. There's a good hot cup of coffee waitin' up ahead.....

A Trilogy Review In Two Parts 1 Aug. 2014
By Kevan James - Published on
Format: Audio CD
First up, it’s always good to have new Dale Watson music. If you have enjoyed his previous trucking albums, I think you’ll enjoy volume 3 too. If you didn’t enjoy the first two, then I don’t think this one will improve your view! For me volume 3 wins over volume 2 by virtue of being all new songs rather than the mix of old and new that 2 featured (at least I think they’re all new). I also think that the addition of the great fiddle playing of Jason Roberts from Asleep at the Wheel adds plenty to the enjoyment (and don’t miss Jason’s own recent release “That’s My Home”).

What to say about the songs? Nothing earth shatteringly different from the first two truckin’ albums but what can you really expect from such a collection? It’s good old fashioned country, with plenty of steel and fiddle, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. The combination of “Long Truckin’ Day” and “Suicide Sam” makes for a great opening to an album, and the frantic instrumental “10-100” a great closer. It was suggested by Saving Country Music website that “10-100” is the perfect start to the album, so try programming your machine to play that before the first two songs ….. certainly livens things up a bit!

I first remember hearing “Texas Armadillo” a couple of years ago. Dale used to do a thing where he and the band would make up a song on the spot about subjects shouted from the crowd: this is one such song and soon became something of a crowd favourite – and with lyrics along the lines “The chicken will cross the road for fun, just to show the armaillo how it’s done!” it’s not really surprising. Nice to finally see it recorded! And listen out for "I'm-a Truckin'" - a trucking waltz? Not something you hear very often!!

“We’re Truckin’ Along” is a duet with Amber Digby. The combination of Dale and Amber should make for country music gold and indeed it does. This is a playful duet and certainly sounds as if they had fun recording it. I hope this is the first of many such songs together - would love to hear the two of them covering some of the old classics rather like Gene Watson and Rhonda Vincent did a few years back.

An easy five stars for the new music!

So having dealt with that, now onto the “Trilogy” as a package. If you haven’t already bought the first two volumes, this is obviously a really good value purchase. But what about those long time Watson fans who have bought all the albums over the years? Having it so that the new music on volume 3 isn’t available to purchase on a standalone CD or as a separate download is a bit of a bummer. OK, you can download the songs on volume 3 individually but 14 x $1.29 is $18, whilst buying the whole set is $15 …. no brainer really!! I wouldn’t mind so much if it was worth buying a physical copy to take advantage of some nice packaging but it’s a fairly simple three-panel digipack, with one panel detailing the recording information for volume 3 – there’s no details for volumes 1 and 2.
But, overall, it IS a good value collection and I doubt any Dale Watson fan will be disappointed with the music. I was tempted to score it lower than five stars overall due to the oddity of having to double up on music I’ve already bought but have finally come away feeling that as long as it’s “buyer beware” and you accept that this is the way is, it would be wrong to rate the new music low simply due a strange marketing idea. My advice – shop around for the best price and enjoy some truckin’ good music!

I became a fan after seeing Dale perform on Austin City Limits. Even though this music wasn't created in the 60s or 70s, if you like old time classic country (ie Buck Owens, Bob Willis and his Texas Playboys, and a dash of George Strait and George Jones), then this collection is for you..plenty of Telecaster, steel pedal guitar and fiddle to go with Dale's wonderfully deep vocals. All of the songs are about trucks, truck stops and a trucker's life with a fun sense of humorous lyrics on many songs. They don't make country music like this anymore. Pop in these CDs and cruise on down the highway, but it will force you to stop off at the next roadside diner for a cup of Joe!

"Dalebilt" is right! This is a must have in my opinion, maybe not for everyone, but as far as "occupational" songs go & authentic country music go that doesn't sell out to the mainstream forces that be, this is fantastic. I spend considerable time driving and/ or operating equipment, if this was a cassette or vinyl I would have to replace it already as it plays (now from my phone) in anything & everything that has a stereo in it. Also, crystal clear production, great guitar on these tracks & if you're a serious "twang" fan the Telecaster rides coast to coast on these tracks. Thanx Dale for keepin' it real...for real.
