4.0 out of 5 stars Teenage paranormal romance 12 July 2011
The Trouble With Spells by Lacey Weatherford is the story of Portia and Vance. Portia seems to be a normal girl approaching her 16th birthday. Vance is the unknown around school, he keeps to himself and the rumors about him are pretty wild. He also seems to be the guy that most of the girls secretly dream of dating.

On Portia's 16th birthday she learns that she is a witch. She learns that her father and grandmother are both magically inclined as well. Her biggest surprise is finding out that Vance is a member of the same coven that she will be joining. They begin to become romantically involved and the relationship moves extremely quickly from an emotional standpoint, with them having a joining ceremony and promising marriage.

The action of the story comes from Vance's family. His father is an evil warlock who has been following Vance to corrupt him. Living life on the run has made it difficult for Vance to get close to those around him as he has spent his life moving. Finding his soulmate in Portia has made him want to stand up to his father so he no longer has to run.

The story flowed pretty smoothly it was just a bit too much teenage romance for my taste. At the end of the story the action really begins to pick up and I am interested in reading the second book in the series. If you enjoy paranormal romance then this is a series you should check out for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, loved it. 24 Aug. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book, yes; it started in the POV of Vance, and how he saw her, but could not even talk to her, not yet. Why, because she had no idea she was a witch. Then into Portia's POV for the rest of the book, and I loved the idea behind her name. Brilliant. I really loved the connection between the two characters, and the electricity they seemed to generate. Who doesn't love a good romance, and this alone was a fantastic, throw in the fact there are witches and warlocks into the mix. I just can't fault it.

I read this novel in one sitting, just could not put it down. Will be looking for the second part, so I can continue to read on, to find out what happens with their story. I recommend this to one. All I can say is loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Teenage witch plot 23 Feb. 2012
    By Sandy
    Format:Kindle Edition
Being a great fan of Harry Potter, Twilight and Vampire diaries, I was looking for another series that would be related to witches, vampires etc., but different from the rest at the same time. And this book brought me exactly what I was looking for - a bit of spell casting, supernatural, romance, suspense... despite it being a real teenage read. I would have preferred more developed characters and in some places spending more time on situations, but overall a very positive experience, fast moving read, and you do not want to put the book down.

Am definitely going right now to purchase the next book in the series, as I cannot wait to learn what will happen next. A great start to a different series than you find elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Falling in love with a warlock 20 April 2011
    By Celine
I really enjoyed reading about the magical human kind of powers again. After all those werewolves and vampires, it's nice to read about the grandma with a coven hiding in her basement. Who wouldn't want such a grandma?

When Portia turns sixteen, she learns that she has magical powers. Together with her grandma and father she is in a coven, where she discovers that Vince, the hottest guy in school, is a warlock. They fall in a love so strong they can't even stand to be separated any more. But Vince has a dark past that catches up with him...

The Trouble With Spells is a very romance heavy book. Almost suffocatingly so. They bind themselves together with magic, like a magical engagement, making it physically hurt to be apart from each other. It was the complete opposite of the usual romantic plot line of a young-adult novel. There is no angsty "does he really like me" rambling, but unconditional love. Maybe it's cynical me speaking, but I thought it to be a tiny bit scary. It's like marrying on your sixteenth. It was well written though, and their love for each other, while a bit creepy, was very believable. You can understand why they care for each other, and this is one of those things that's really hard to achieve in a book.

One of the best things about this book was the magic part. I liked the descriptions about the rituals and the spells. Even though this book has its foundation in an old concept, it doesn't feel corny at all. There were some really cool new abilities added that made me very excited.

I liked both the main characters Portia and Vance a lot. They both have their flaws, but they only get more likeable because of them. I think Vance will make a lot of women all over the world swoon and flutter!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story... 19 May 2013
    By Kristen
    Format:Kindle Edition
Read this book before I started reviewing books properly and decided to give it a reread as I'd given it a 5 star rating yet couldn't remember anything of the story. After reading this a second time though I'm not sure I'm so in love with it. Although the story was interesting and not really something I'd come across before, I felt a little let down by the writing style. The language was very simplistic and there wasn't enough of an investment in character development. The dialogue between characters also left a lot to be desired. I was willing to get past all that though, I mean it's a free book, so what if it wasn't perfect. What really creamed my corn with this book was all the stupid perfectionism. I mean seriously, how perfect can a sixteen year old girl be? I remember myself at sixteen I was a nightmare, I don't know how my mum coped with me. Now if I'd been told that my dad wasn't really an Encyclopedia salesman but was really a warlock and wait, what? that meant I was a witch and I'd been led to my whole life, there would have been some serious words. But no not Perfect Portia, she's just like 'oh cool, when do I learn'. Seriously the girl is unreal.

So all in all, a good story with interesting concepts but could be improved.
